Default Extreemly rare chevelle

I have a chevelle that i have been told that is is very rare. but i would like to know if a car like this one even existed. it is a 1964 Chevelle SS with a 365hp 327 and a 4 speed tranny. all the numbers on this car match. is this car for real? did they make one of these? any help would be appreciated.

thanks
josh

283 V8 195bp.
283 V8 220bhp.
327 V8 250bhp
327 V8 300bhp

those are the V8 engine options for 1964, no such thing as a 365 HP in a chevelle. There was a 365 HP engine for the corvette however.

There was going to be a 365 hp 327 option for the '64 Chevelle but the factory cancelled it. It was the Corvette engine but needed different exh manifolds to fit the Chevelle. The story was (IIRC) that the Chevelle engineers didn't want to use the std Chevelle V8 exh manifolds and design new ones but it didn't get approved and they cancelled the option before any production cars were built with it. If you have a real one, it would be very very rare as in one of one, probably a factory prototype. I'd be very skeptical of this one. If numbers match it could be a restamp. Do your homework. It might be worth having someone very experienced in this area (block stampings) take a look at it.

How do you know it is a 365HP? If it is a decal on the air cleaner it means nothing.

Seems to me I remember a feature article in a magazine sometime in the last several years about such a car. If I recall, the production was in the single digits?????? I think it was a 64????

Read that same article and most doubted the car's pedigree but seemed to be legit to me and apparently the magazine. I'll try to dig it up.

There was an excellent article written by Chuck Hanson in the September / October 1998 Issue of Chevelle World titled, "Texas Two-Step, Cuttin' The Rug In A Pair Of Rare Chevelles". It is about Bob Macy and his his L-76 1964 Malibu SS and his 1965 Z-16.
The Chevelles are absolutely gorgeous. The article has a lot of good information.

I did a title search for all owners of my 69 SS396, and Bob Macy (Lubbock, TX) was one of the previous owners. I contacted him by phone (about 4-5 months ago) regarding my Chevelle. During our conversation, he mentioned having a '64 L76, and said there were less than 20 made. Supposedly, the option was cancelled in Dec. '63.

I saw that car at Chevellabration about 10 years ago. The story (may or may not be true) I heard at the time was that the car was a "made" copy and not a real L76.

i ran the numbers on the engine and thats how i found out that it was a 365hp engine. i was told that there were only a few of these cars in existence. I appreciate all of the reply's. if this car is for real... what would it be worth? i really have no need for this car. when i ordered parts for this car a while back, the people at the parts place in California were freaking out and saying how rare it was. how can i tell for sure?

thanks
josh

What is the assembly date/suffix code stamped on the pad? Engine casting # and date?

You know it's a 365 hp motor but is it a JS code? Can't find the mag article but searched around and concensus agrees the L76 made it into a "handful" of chevelles early in the production run before it was cancelled. The reason stated was that chevy needed to recast the big 2 1/2" dump exhaust manifolds to fit the A-body. I know the 283's never came with vin. numbers on the front pad but maybe the L76's (if they do exist) had the vins. Was your car built before Dec.? Google "1964 chevelle L76".

Here is another good post to review:

http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213030

Chevrolet had the right idea in 1964.
The Z-16 Malibu SS in 1965 was a preview of good things to come.
The rest is history.
