Question Brodix 2X head, 340 intake runner for my 540 motor?

Anybody out there run the Brodix 2X head on a 505+ inch motor?

I'd love to know what your combo is and what performance you've gotten out of them. I'm hoping they will bridge the "gap" between street car and 1k+ HP under 15psi of boost from twin 76mm turbos. I think they have the top end flow, I'm just curious about out of boost use. I expect to run them out of the box with minimal labor put into them.

As usual, any input is welcomed. I'm a novice to say the least.

A friend had them on a 496 that was using a 8-71 blower. They had a little cleanup but no real porting. The car weighed 3600 lbs and ran 9.70s @142. This was at 9 lbs of boost on pump gas (compression was 8:1). We think it was making around 870hp.

Super info there Mike. I don't know why I am chewing my nails over some off idle power for my combination. I need to quit that and focus on the big numbers. I can't help but make enough power down low with a 540 and the correct stall, right? Well, we'll see.

I have a trans brake for the track anyway.

If your going to have twin turbo's on it, off idle power will be absent anyway.
By the time the turbo's spool you'll be into a high enuf rpm range for the heads to really start working.
It really depends on the rest of your combination, but it would seem to me a pretty good choice. If you have to have Brodix.

The 2X head needs some work in unported form. Regardless of what they advertise the best flow numbers you are going to see will be in the 340 range on the intake. With porting or a CNC program you can get the intakes up to about 390-400 without breaking the bank.

The exhaust needs the most work and can show the most gains. You can pick up substanial flow with a well ported exhaust. The chambers also need some work that will improve mid-lift flow and the transition from the seat into the chamber.

That being said, if you can't make enough power with dual 76 turbo's (regardless of the head as long as it is decent) you have a serious problem with something besides the induction system. The better the head the lower the boost number will be.

I would get a good set of heads already CNC such a BMF, AFR, RFD, or Chapman to name a few. The CNC program is well spent considering the power per dollar you will gain. In your case since you are going to blow it in if the head is a little larger than the conventional suck it in you will be fine.

I have run 4.70's (1/8 mile) naturally aspirated with a set of 2X heads I ported on a 1850 lb
dragster with a 557 BBC. Not too bad but if I had to buy a set of heads today they would not be my choice.

How much rpm are you looking at spinning this mill?

Can I answer that with: As little as possible.
I would like to use a hydraulic roller and shift below 7000RPM. Say, put the shift light at 6500RPM.

From what I have learned on the Turbo Forums, I can achieve 1300HP with stock heads and 15psi from twin 76s on a 540cid motor. So, I should be chosing the head with my "80% steet goal" in mind. i.e. Oval port and moderate runner cc (not huge). Whatever short comings I have on the flow can be overcome by boost. I guess an analogy would be 14 psi with Brodix 2x could be matched in performance with 17psi and a smaller valve stock head??

Perhaps I should look at the Brodix BB3 oval runner?

I am leaning towards Brodix because my builder (Jeff wilkerson who works 10 minutes from my house) likes their head under boost because of the protection they give for the gasket surface material. Or something to the effect of head gaskets lasting longer under boost.

If anyone wants to steer me away, just post up a link and I'll do smoe reading and phone calling.

If you want to stay with Brodix then the Head Hunter would be my choice.

A friend made 1890hp on a twin 72mm turbo setup on pumpgas with a 540 and 357CNC afr heads.

No idle problems...

For that kind of RPM then I would stay in the 325cc range no matter if if was an AFR/Brodix or Dart. Either of the 3 heads will have good deck integrity and be able to hold a gasket no issue. All 3 heads based on their I/E ratio's will take a different camshaft. Out of the AFR is going to have the best mid range number and in effect take the smallest camshaft to make good power. Might be something to consider as far as long term maintenance cost.

Hi Mike, look around here for the post about the Super Chevy weekend at Maple Grove just this past weekend. It was a post I started about the fuel.

The unit we built for the '56 Chev, using some "old" Brodix 2X's (360 runners?) ran a best of 8.80 @ 156 on "E-85" (2.10/gal) at 4000+ lbs. Well above 17# boost with a "Whipple"!

Ride is a 100% NY registered street-legal "cruiser" and a real "head-turner" for sure. Before he made the switch, he could run (cruise) on our local 93 octane!

Many of our fastest street rides have used Brodix to get the job done! Both SB's and BB's.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. You don't really want "small" runners on any non-N.A. units! The blower/turbo will make short work of the torque requirements!
