Default 1969 chevelle ss decode??

My buddy has a friend with a very nice Chevelle 1969 SS
cowl tag reads 69 13637 ATL187496
791 61 E
01B
the vin # is 136379A315731 this car is nice! I originally was going to buy a 1972 but couldnt read the cowl tag and the appraisal ended up being less than shat the guy wanted for it. This car I can visually see and its very clean, just wondering what it was originally and any history I can dig up. Thanks for the help.

Interesting combo, the orig. paint was burnished brown, not common, the orig. vinyl top was parchment along with the bucket seat interior. With a parchment int. the dash, dash pad, and carpet were black.
The body was assembled on the 2nd week of Jan, 69, sequence no. 187496 at the atlanta plant.
The vin. only tells me it's a malibu base which could mean malibu or the SS396.
Was the car orginally an SS? and does he have proof either way?

Check the Partial VIN on the block and see if it matches the VIN. Look for a Build Sheet, Protect-O-Plate, Original Bill of Sale, etc. to verify.

That car was built two weeks and a little over 1500 units after my 12D ATL SS396 was built.

01B is second week of Jan.
My book says trim #791 is for Parchment vinyl seats but doesn't say buckets.

187496 from the trim tag isn't the sequence number, it's a data processing number from Fisher Body. VIN sequence is (136379A)315731 and sequencing began with 300001 in 1969 making it the 15,731st Atlanta Chevelle.

Need a new book, or at least a reference link; 791 is code for buckets.

Thanks Dale. I believe that's the second time that I've found that error in the book (no asterisk for bucket seats)
The book is "Catalog Of Chevelle, Malibu & El Camino ID Numbers 1964-87"

I added an asterisk this time for future reference.

They list 790 & 791 as the same (vinyl with no asterisk for buckets).

What does "Aff." mean in '790 ~ Aff. Parchment" Coated Fabric" ?

I think this color combination looks awesome on a '69. Here's a picture of one that was at the Vettefest show a while back that I had saved. It's a very rich looking combo in my book.

[QUOTE=DaleM;2413251]187496 from the trim tag isn't the sequence number, it's a data processing number from Fisher Body. VIN sequence is (136379A)315731 and sequencing began with 300001 in 1969 making it the 15,731st Atlanta Chevelle.

Dale, to quote Allen Colvin's book, this # is "The assembly plant....sequential number of that body style produced at that assembly plant. The body sequence number is four to six digits. This number was a factory tracking code, with no correlation to the VIN sequence number. All car bodies came down the final assembly line a random style order, with the order adjusted depending upon the sales demand."

This means that the number was a "sequence" number assigned to each body style ie; a 134-- cars used a seperate sequence than say 136-- model cars. You're correct that the number doesn't represent the vin. sequence no. and that's why I said it was the number at the ATL plant.

I'm pretty sure we're meaning the same thing.
