Default Removing accelerator pump on edelbrock

Hi,
I have a 1407 Edelbrock Performer Series carb. How hard is it to remove the accelerator pump? The rod that connects the pump to the lever is odd in shape and is hard to remove. Almost in the shape of an "s".

Thanks,
Ethan

You will then need to take off the related linkages for the choke, choke kick down lever/weight and then all the screws on the top - then take the top off the carb carefully because the floats are hanging down. Then you have access to the pump.

Thanks guys. How do I know if my accelerator pump is bad? Sorry, I probably should have asked this before the other question. I had hesitation on acceleration of the engine when I took this carb off. Could accelerator pump been the problem? I'm sure it could be other things as well.

If it has the leather wrap on the pump and it has sat for a while, then it would most likely be the issue. The replacement pumps have a plastic or rubber wrap on the plunger which can take the goofy gas that they sell these days.... I had the same issue with mine.

... but keep in mind there are other things that can cause a hesitation. I would check the pump by opening the throttle and watching the 'squirt' to see if it is a strong one. Please do NOT have the engine running while doing this.

I had a hesitation on my 72. I also decided to change the acc. pump. I didn't notice any difference with the new one so i moved the linkage to give it a furthur push on the pump. That seemed to help a little, Then i tried some carb and injector cleaner in my fuel and topped off with 110 octane. I have put about 100 miles on it and the hesitation seems to be going away.

As stated, the quick test for the pump is activate the throttle linkage and look for a discharge from the squirters (car off).

In the Eddelbrock tuning guide, the accelerator pump is one of the last steps in curing a hesitation. THis is more likely to be a sizing of the rods/jets transition from cruise to power. Unlike a Holley, the Eddelbrock allows tuning of both the amount and timing of the power circuit -- which can show up as a hesitation.

Very true, Zeke. We don't know if this is a sudden problem, or if it has been going on for a long time. Has the car sat for a year without fuel going through it? Does it happen when the car is being driven normally or on full acceleration? Lots of info that we don't have yet.

Mike,
It hasn't been quite a year yet since I changed over to a Qjet. When I first got the car (February of last year), it was fine. When my brother flooded the engine, it started hesitating. I don't know if it flooding has anything to do with it though. It only happened when I pressed pedal alittle. I don't remember much, but I'll have to find that thread I started here when this first started happening.

Is this an Eddy 1407, or a Q-Jet?

Zeke,
I changed over to a Qjet. The problem is with the eddy and the hesitation is from the 1407 eddy, too. Sorry for adding something I didn't need to.

Ethan,

I may be trying to answer the wrong question. Are you trying to learn about the Eddy and go back to it? Or do you have a Q-Jet question?

It's unlikely that flooding would cause a hesitation to show up, unless you really fuel fouled the plugs and they need replacing.

If both carbs exhibit the hesitation, you have another problem, either a vacuum leak or timing.

Zeke,
I changed over to the Qjet, because I needed just alittle better gas mileage and I plan on staying with the Qjet. But, when I pulled the Edelbrock off, it was having problems with the hesitation. Can the vacuum leak cause the hesitation? After I looked at the Eddy, the cap that goes over one of the ports on the carb, was ripped and looks like it might have been a vacuum leak. Could this be my problem?

Ethan
