The guy that won the Limited street class of tonight's shootout race wasn't the fastest, didn't do much af a wheelie, or run the quickest pass. He did run the same times in all three of his runs and cut real good lights. The guy who does the biggest wheelie usually looses the race from my experiences.

Yes that's true, but the wheelies are real crowd pleasers, so I guess it boils down to how much of a showman the driver wants to be. Some guys are more competitive, and only want the trophies and/or the purse money, while others are showmen, and are the crowd pleasers. That's why the driver back in the 90's Nick Scavo always wowed the crowd whereever he went with his black wheelstanding 4,000 LB 65 Impala that ran in the mid 8's. But there's nothing wrong with either approach IMO. Just different preferences.

Well considering I created a class...Midwest SuperStock Mafia and our rules are big wheelies and big burnouts..i guess the guy with the Biggest Wheelie actually wins!! Its about putting seats in the seats at the races..your average Joe doesnt care how fast a car is or how they minipulate a small tire off the line and still go fast..they care that the tires smoke past the line...They care the wheels are in the air..ive sat in the stands and i have heard the cheers when any car does a wheelstand...without the fans there is no races..the Tracks cant survive without Fans..racers dont cover the costs of operating this facilities..never have! Harold you constantly bust my butt about the wheelies...obviously there not your cup of tea and thats cool...but look at the response this thread generated..i dont have a budget to be able to be competitve in this area..most of the cars that run around here are in the 7.50 to 7.80 range...same rules! They just got away from the big wheelies and thats where my lil group came in...yes i stand it up way higher then most...but i have fun and the car seems to like the attention

Our shootout cars occasionally do unintentional big wheelies but our organization doesn't allow wheelie bars and that results in lots of "really" high wheelies and a lot of header and pan damage, and back pain, hence that is why i favor less high wheelies. Nothing wrong with a big wheelie but i will guarantee that it is not the quickest way to the end of the track. The Lemon headers cost $1400, coated, so there is a lot of expense involved with pleasing the spectators. The prettiest wheelie i ever personally saw was when my son's Chevelle carried the wheels about 150 ft. at an altitude of about 4"-5" off the ground before it sitting them down, very softly. The guy in the other lane on that small wheelie run went clear up on the parachute holder with all 4 wheels off the strip and tore up all kinds of stuff when he came back to down. He also lost the race and had to fix several thousand dollars worth of broken parts, not to mention, he has had a bad back ever since. My son's car has run low eights so it is very capable of going up on the bumper anytime, but doing so hurts. P.S..... Dennis i think your car is beautifull, but frankly 6" less wheelie would excite the crowd just as much and get you to the other end sooner and be a lot less stressfull to the cars suspension parts.

These particular model shocks from AFCO are supposed to prevent the damage, and I know of one guy on here who uses these and does big wheelies with his 67 Chevelle, and has told me that these shocks prevent damage, and cause the front end landing to be so smooth, that it's unbelieveable unless it's experienced, and his car weighs 3,600 LBS. These shocks also give you the option of using them with coil-over springs, or they can also be used with stock type coil spings. Notice what the fine print says below (over the picture of the shocks). I've also included the link to the webpage where these can be found, but they can also be purchased from summit racing:

Stock, Super Stock, Outlaw 10.5, True Street & Others

The BNC shocks are designed to better absorb the impact of the car after a wheel stand launch. They can be used in coil-over applications with the optional kit.

Billy, i have a friend that i have gone to the races with a couple of times this year that has a low 10 second '69 Camaro S/S car. He has those AFCO shocks. His car wheelstands every run about like Dennis' Chevelle. The AFCO's have started to leak after about a dozen runs, so they may or may not be the answer. They also bounce a little after the initial landing, may so it might take a lot of experimenting to find the right settings or maybe a front spring change. It usually goes 1.36 sixty foots. If it had a little more power it might carry the wheelstand to a softer landing, something like Bob's would be fine.
