Question How do you repair the clear coat on aluminum rims.

Some water has gotten under the finish and caused some discoloration on a couple of my aluminum rims on my 2004 Chevy Silvarado. Is there a way that I can clean that up and refinish the rims in the garage rather than take them to the body shop? Thanks.

Not easy to do, James. We have a company around here that takes the wheel, strips it, repairs any needed areas, refinishes them like new, and they last better than new, for like $180 a wheel. Our local place is called Transwheel.

You would have to strip it to get off the remaining clear coat. Then buff the oxidation off the machined surfaces, clean up your cast areas and reclear.

$180 is kind of out of the question for me Dave. Would rather spend the $$'s on the Chevelle. Is there an easy way to strip the clear? Do you just use a paint stripper? After buffing the oxidation what about reparing the rim so that the clear adhears good?

It's a BIG job.

You'll need to strip the clear and it's probably powder coat so paint stripper won't work. It'll need to be sanded off. Once the clear is off you'll need to clean up all of the oxidation and polish the rims. Then you'll need to get the rims super clean so the clear will stick with wax and grease remover followed with Alumiprep. Finally you'll need to clear the rims with a urethane clear coat. After all that work, the urethane clear won't hold up as well as the original powder coat and you'll likely have to do it all over in a couple years.

I would just live with it or find some different wheels.

Tom

Check this out from POR 15: http://www.por15.com/WHEEL-RESTORATI...oductinfo/WPK/ Not sure how this works but I was thinking about using this kit for some s-10 wheels I had.

By the time you get them stripped, cleaned, prepped, etched, and painted, you'll have more than $180 a wheel in them. Good clearcoat alone is over $300 a gallon sprayable. Acid etch prep is $50 a gallon. Figure $20 a wheel to get them strippped....not to mention the 3 or 4 hours it'll consume......see where I'm going with this, James??

You might be able to clean the area up well enough to brush some activated clear onto the wheel, and that might hold you for a while.

E-Bay what you have and buy new. You'll come out cheaper with much less legwork.
