That was actually built out of a diesel Cutlass, he had to have a diesel VIN to avoid cali emissions.

I used to feel the same way. Cummins, yeah pretty loud. Got a Powerstroke work truck, also very loud. My Dmax is not loud at all, in fact many people riding in it have commented that it sounds just like a gas engine.

As far as smoke, again, the older ones did but the newer ones don't unless modded. Doesn't help that a large number of diesel owners want to "roll coal", pouring black smoke out the exhaust, which is a simple tuning change away. Mine doesn't smoke at all, other than a brief puff if I go wot all at once, then it's just for a second until the turbo(s) catch up and then it looks like a gas engine going down the road.

As far as looks, if I was doing one in an older car then you can make them look good by eliminating all the extra crap that the trucks get that you wouldn't need. Mine isn't too bad looking for a truck, but in a car I'd have custom headers and sheetmetal intake, twin turbos in the normal V8 gas locations, etc. to really change the look.

My "puller" buddy is telling me interesting things about new diesels: 100+ pounds boost for one; can't do that pump gas. He also tells me 1/2 degree difference in valve/injector timing change makes a big difference with big boost. I guess when the stroke gets longer, the degrees get bigger.

My dad has a '09 Chevy CC with a duramax. Its... annoyingly quiet, I just like to hear what's going on, and in his truck I have to turn off the radio to hear anything.

I don't really care for the 'small' diesel sound (powerstroke, cummins, dmax) but IMO the semi's with open pipes are awesome.

Here's a little video showing some diesel power.
Enjoy (or not)
