Default Comp Cams 280H Magnum and Vortec

This is the max lift for stock vortecs correct??

cam specs

Magnum 280H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft Only
Lift: .480''
Duration: 280°
RPM Range: 2000-6000

Have this cam in motor already. Have a set of stock vortecs with about 50k miles on them sitting on shelf. Thinking outloud about putting these on the Camaro. Have vortec intake already also. Didn't want to spend big $$'s on modifying heads if I didn't need to. Flat Top TRW pistons. Current heads are 64cc 2.02 intake 1.94' exhaust.

Thanxs david

Which Vortec head casting number? Here's an article on the iron heads.

Damn, I thought the lift limit was .450". Spring change I could do myself. Buddy can do the valve job. So:

Valvespring, beehive
Comp Cams 26918 $186

-Retainer, steel
Comp Cams 774 $59

-Keepers, 7-degree
Comp Cams 648-16 $28

Still half the price of brand new stock vortecs.

Vortec cylinder head
GMPP 12558060 $489/pair*

I was hoping a gasket set was all I was lacking!#%
-Vortec head, modified
Scoggin-Dickey SD8060A $639/pair*

Gotta go look in the shop. There still bolted to the complete motor.

The vortecs have a talled guide so you`ll most likley have to have it machined down. you can buy the tools from summit and do it yourself or you can buy cranes springs that is for this application or you can do what is refered to as the "ghetto grind" on some sites on the bottom of the retainers.

Don't forget you need a Vortec intake to fit the heads, the center bolt valve covers and self aligning rockers.

machine the valve guide down for clearance, and either use your existing springs and retainers or buy the beehive springs and retainers.

Will be a good investment for power over a stock head.

You can also use +.050'' valve locks.

That's a really big exhaust valve. Most heads don't have one much larger than 1.6".

The 280H CompCam is really .486 lift with 1.5 rockers.

Great little cam IMO... got it into the low 12's in a 406 with 10:1 compression. Here's how it sounded -> http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...t=DSCF0001.flv
