Default SUN engine analyzer

Found an analyzer on the local craigslist. Was wondering if anyone still uses these at home. Anything I should look for on the unit before I. buy it. What can I do with it tune up /performance wise?

I hope you're not going to give the guy more than $50 bucks for it. They aren't very useful. When it was brand new, the shop I worked for got one. They didn't call it the Sun "Aggravator" for nothing. It told you that everything was wrong and below standard. A hand held code reader is infinitely more useful than that thing. If you want it to tune the Chevelle, a timing light and set of feeler gauges will work better than that. Sorry, just my .02.

i've got an older model than that in the shed at my mom's- everything on it works, but it is kind of ungainly to use for anything. it's not a Sun brand, tho- it's an FMC
but i did get it for free- along with an old (mid to late 80's) alignment machine that works, but needs to be calibrated.
if nothing else, they make for neat conversation pieces and add a little bit of atmosphere to the shop- much like old gas pumps and what not.

I remember using one of those ,even a little older in high school.I remember that you could kill one cylinder at a time and not rpm drop of each.

you can check pri and sec ignition patterns with the scope, firing voltage ,dwell. individual cyl performance, worn dist shafts and a ton of other things. if you know how to use it you can save a ton of time

They work only as well as the operator. Very handy on older vehicles but takes some time learning to read patterns.

they are tools that require the operator to have a working knowledge of what's going in inside the engine- they don't just tell you what's wrong like the newer stuff does- they give you the info, and make you sort it out.

my 15 year old cousin thought that all the squiggly lines on the scope were kinda neat when he came over while i had mine hooked up to my Monte one day- 8 peaks that signified each firing impulse in order.. i could kill each cylinder one by one and watch the tach and vacuum gauge go bonkers, and he thought that was way cooler than the OBD2 scanners his buddies had for their newer rice burners..

If the book comes with it and you have room and you also want to learn what it will do I suggest buying it. They can do way more than you imagine. Hope it has an exhaust hook-up that works.

Have fun,
Jon

ANY automotive ignition scope is a VERY COOL tool, that can tell you LOADS about the engine, if you know how to interpret the results.

$75??? GRAB IT assuming it has a full lead set and still works! That's way more bulky than a Snap-On Counselor series, but it's still going to be a great tool if you have room for it.

A local garage was closing down and gave me an older Sun analyzer. That thing was huge and took up too much room. Never did put it to use. It is now taking up space at Phillip's garage. I think he is having the same fun I had. Get this thing only if you have a lot of room for it.
