Default Chevy 396 - What's it worth??

Help! I have someone interested in purchasing my 1969 396 casting number 3955272 "Hi Perf Truck." I removed the motor from my '72 Corvette last summer. The motor ran well, but since the 'vette is getting a frame off, I was going to do a mild rebuild on it since I did not know the motor's history. However, I later decided to put the 350 it originally came with back in. So, my dilema - I have absolutely no idea what to ask for this motor. It is partially dissasembled with the intake and heads off it, but it is complete from intake to oil pan. Basically, I want to make sure we are both getting a good deal - I don't want to give it away, and I don't want to scare him away by asking too much. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My first thought would be $4-$500. What exactly would a high performance truck be? A C-10 short bed?

I had the same short block for sale forever, it had 60 over trw pistons, sps rod bolts, included was a fresh 10-10 crank kit. 7" balancer, new moly rings in a box. I finally got $300 for the whole works. Jim

Pretty much ALL Big Blocks (at least from the 60's/70's) are cast with "Hi Perf Truck" Or similar...

I don't know if anyone knows what the true meaning is, but most people I know (at least people that know engines, like machinists, etc) seem to think it means the block was applicable or acceptible for both Hi Performance, OR truck applications. "according to Chevrolet, "High Performance" was the 350 HP 396. the L78, 375HP was the "Special High Performance" version, and those used the 4-bolt block, etc...

Basically, there is no significant difference between this block and any other "regular" BB block... That block would have been used for 265 HP, 325HP, 350 HP, 396s, etc...

Unless it has 4-bolt mains, Rectangular Port heads, factory aluminum intake, etc, then I'd say it MIGHT be worth $500, semi-complete but disassembled. Add a little more for "nice" aftermarket parts like intake and carb... Complete and assembled and running (so a buyer can actually see and hear it), then its worth a bit more... You might find someone looking for "date correct" that might pay a bit more too...

not sure about the earlier engines, but in the 454 era engines "Truck" was cast into tall deck big blocks, and "hi perf" or "hi perf pass" was cast into regular height big blocks.
