I wasn't satisfied with the last buch of it I bought either. It used to work a helluva lot better. I bet the tree huggers made them take the active ingredients out.

Whatever you do, don't try putting it in a fry-daddy and heating it to 200 and rigging up an aerator also. It works then bygosh. Good way to get rid of any pesky dichromate finish.

I just used the Gunk brand in the gallon container, worked good but had to brush some parts. Got it at advance auto for about 20 bucks.I don't think the new cleaners are as good older chemicals due to epa restrictions.

The ol "Gunk " from 20 years would take the hide off of an alligator. I left some parts in a gallon Gunk can years ago ...about 2 months later, pulled into basement, smelled odor. Gunk had eating thru bottom of can and drenched work bench. Bottom of can was literally eaten away. Sold me on their product. Just wish it was still that strong.

The active ingredients in the "old" carburetor cleaners was toluene and xylene. It's kind of ironic that they took the stuff out of our carb cleaner to save the environment but you can still buy it at Home Depot.

If you use it, be sure to wear gloves. Both toluene and xylene are readily absorbed through the skin and will end up in your liver.

Also, wear EYE protection!!!...

I dipped my carb once (about 15 years ago), and as I dropped it in the bucket (gently), it splashed a little bit... One drop landed just inside my nose... Instant pain... Thankfully no damage...

I now usually use a full face shield for that kind of work...

That's so true... I accidentally got spayed in my eye with carb cleaner... I thought I was going to go blind, it hurt so bad.

ingredients of B-9 Chemtool pre-2006:

Methylene Chloride (Dichloromethane) 75-09-2 55-65
Cresols Mixture 10-15
Mixed Xylenes 1330-20-7 20-30
Sodium Bichromate 10588-01-9 <4
Ethyl Benzene 100-41-4 <6

this is the old stuff that actually works but is toxic nasty. IIRC it's the Cresylic Acid that did the deed.

ingredients of California product and now all B-9 since April 2006:

Primary Amines Mixture 10-30
2-Butoxyethanol 111-76-2 10-30
Ethoxylated Alkyl Amines Mixture 1-10

Notice any difference?

I'll probably die of some weird cancer. I used to reach down in the bucket with bare arm to retrieve lost carb parts. What we didn't know then..... Used to use air gun to clean nasty drum brakes before working on them. Asbestos? What asbestos? What, me worry?
