Default 99 ford Contour 2.0 Zetec VCT engine.

I'm working on my granddaughter's 1999 ford Contour 2.0 Zetec VCT engine.

I just had a valve job done and had the head milled due to a blown head gasket.
I have had this thing apart and re-checked the timing on the cams many many times using the Ford flat bar and timing pin tools.

Everything seems to be correct but evidently it's not because the engine surges badly.

I scanned the OBD codes and got two codes, P0135 - Oxygen Sensor Heater circuit fault - Bank No. 1 and P1383 - Variable cam timing over-retarded.

Can't figure out what I'm missing and doing wrong as I think I followed the instructions correctly.

Here's how I've been doing it.

Set the balancer on the TDC mark

Inserted the timing pin.

With both cam sprocket bolts left just a little bit loose, I set the cams with the flat bard tool inserted and the #1 lobes on the intake cam facing the windshield and the #1 lobes of the exhaust cam facing the front of the car.

I tightened the sprocket bolt on the exhaust cam, then holding the intake cam sprocket so as to take the slack out of the timing belt between the two cam sprockets, tightened the intake cam sprocket.

Adjusted the timing belt tensioner.

Removed the timing pin and the flat bar tool.

Rotated the engine over 720 (two complete revolutions and back to the timing mark on the balancer.

Rechecked the cams with the flat bar tool and re adjusted the exhaust cam somewhat.

Like I said I'm obviously doing something wrong

One thing I didn't understand was putting the line between the little U cut on the metal piece behind the timing belt tensioner.
I mean I can bring it to that position but since it's spring loaded, I don't see any way to get it to stay there (it just springs back to where it was) ? ? ?

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Never mind, I finally found someone that knows how and he told me what I was doing wrong.

What did you end up doing wrong? I am having the same problems and have gone throught the same proceedures you did. I can't seem to get the alignment tool back in both cam slots after the 720 degree revolution stage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh boy, I don't remember now.

I was tightening the two sprockets on the cams BEFORE adjusted the timing belt tensioner rather than after.
After doing the timing belt tensioner first and tightening the sprockets LAST, it was OK.

It's been running fine ever since.

Contour = Garbage

I had a 95, it was a huge POS, got rid of it 1 year after I bought it. Transmission blew, tensioners locked up, wheel bearings went out, glass shattered, water leak and broken fuel door. The thing was brand new off of the showroom floor.

This one has gone 238,000 miles with no problems except for one blow head gasket.
