I am new to this forum and was told about it from a friend. I have a '68 SS 396 El Camino and I am glad to see such good information. I just aquired a block and heads from a racer near here to use in my El Camino. The block is a D10 7 date code #3902406 4 bolt 396 block. It appears to be a nice std bore with no damage anywhere. The number on the pad seems to be TO503MQ 7N222711. I thought about keeping the block for my El Camino but I hate to waste them in it when a 2 bolt will do just as good for me. I also have a pair of stock 840 heads with a date code of E 20 8. One head looks to have had a small area of damage to the top of the valve cover rail at one end and has some epoxy on it. The area is small but still there. Nothing that is major or anything that looks to have leaked oil. I think the heads were off this block but I may be wrong. I know these are some desireable parts but I am not sure of what they are worth or will bring. Any ideas of a price and what kind of car they could have been in originally?
It's from a 67 Camaro, 375hp 4-speed. Value? To someone with a 67 Camaro looking for a big block quite a bit I'd think, maybe $3000 or more for the block and heads to the right buyer. You might post it on Team Camaro, one of the sister sites to Team Chevelle.
I would agree $3000+ the 67 375HP blocks are some of the highest priced 4bolt 396 blocks would not be surprised to see $4000+ for it all together. I would have it all magged and list it on EBAY and see what it brings.............
Not from the date codes supplied. Block is cast April 10, 1967 and finished at Tonawanda May 3. The heads have a casting date indicating May 20, 1968. The head was used in 67, 68, and 69 but since the casting date is under the rocker cover it could still pass casual scrutiny.
A tell-tale sign it's not a 'correct' head for a May 67 engine would be the temp sending boss. A later (earliest found is May 23, 1967) 67 dated head would have the temp sender boss but it wouldn't be drilled; all 68 and 69 heads would have the temp sender drilled and tapped.
Even though the heads and block are from different eras, the square port design would make them desireable for the block to sustain the appearance of a correct match. You might find one person looking for the 68 dated heads and another looking for the 67 block or one buyer willing to take both. Either way I'd say they're worth a good chunk of change to the right buyer.
Ebay sales contain a lot of hype but there's a 70 CE warranty 402 block for sale at $2500. I'd think a 67 block, especially for a Camaro even if the partial VIN is wrong for the intended car, would be worth that much. Just need to find the right buyer.
Currently a 406 4bolt with stamps for 67 is averaging 1800-2200 for a standard bore block that is in good shape. If the owner of the car were to run into it then they would often pay more but then again that is unethical imo. On occasion if you can get more than one person after it on E-Pay it may go higher but lately none have been topping 2k including a 67 service block that had been up for sale for a while. To a 67 L78 owner these are the holy grail as in 67 they were not stamped unlike 68 service blocks. Would love to see a pic of the stamps if you ahve the time and do not mind posting,
Here's a pic of the pad. It looks like some of the numbers weren't stamped correctly but I believe this is the original stamping. The reason I say this is I remember this block being on his block rack in the back of his shop when I worked for this guy back in the early '80's. And we are racers not restorers. Please tell me what you guys think.
NAME?
What were you meaning? CE blocks were numbered? To a 67 L78 owner these are the holy grail as in 67 they were not stamped unlike 68 service blocks.

I think the heads value is not going to be there. 1968 not good. boss is drilled and not going to work for a 67. I have a F 5 7 840 head and a E 23 7 840 head on my runnning engine, niether is drilled. IMO price 2500 - 3000 for all parts and they need to be checked prior to purchase.
