Default T56 6 speed

So my first problem was a clutch but now I have another. Since everything is out of the car I am considering a T56 6 speed and 4.56 rear gears. Problem is I have found a lot of aftermarket 5 speeds but not many 6 speeds. Does any body have any links, know of ones for sale, or know of which ones to stay away from? Should I be looking for a used Corvette, Camaro, or Viper tranny?

If you install a T56 you sure don't need a 4.56 gear. First gear will be useless.
I think some aftermarket vendors convert a T56 shifter location so it will be close.

A Viper transmission has a higher torque rating but will require a lot of work to adapt to a Chevy engine; stick with Corvette or Camaro.

Cool! Thanks guys. I have been researching it and can't believe all the different T56s, just want to get a "good" one.

In the link that Enganer sent me it looks as if the Z06, and GTO have a lower torque rating than the others (except the 93 Fbody). I would have thought the other way around, is it an error on the page or true?

Will a GM T56 bolt up to my Lakewood Muncie scatter shield , and can I use a Mcleod 26 spline street twin without a hydraulic clutch ( same one as the M22 26 spline?). This is pretty much all I can think about right now, the 4spd has already exited the car

OK guys I found a 94 T56 from a Camaro for $1000 5 miles from my home. Car had an engine fire. Is this a good one to use for this swap. Please let me know because right now I am trying to hold back, but will snatch today it if it is a good one!!

94 will be from an LT1 engine. I guess how many miles and what comes with it?

An older sbc will need a different flywheel. DO a search over at LS1tech on what would be involved for a swap for a 406.

Thanks for the replies Enganeer. I spent a bunch of time on that site last night and learned a lot. I hit up your link too, thanks. I went out and picked up that tranny it is out of a 94 or 95 and a couple of the guys didn't want to let it go, one of our last small town grease yards. It was sort of being hidden and everyone "had a plan for it" and I just asked the right question. It has the pressure plate, bell housing, lower mount, clutch fork and shifter. Greasy but Looks decent and goes into all the gears smoothly. On my way out I showed the owner 8 greenbacks and his firm price became a little softer and I walked away with two more gears. Now the fun begins, time for some late nights, in the garage.

T-56's are great, just dont be overzealous with choosing a gear like 4.56. Thats going to get old really really quick. Go a little lower, like 3.73, 3.90, I think that will allow you to use more of your first gear.

I agree with wills65. I keep flipping back and forth about whether to use the 3.73 or 4.11 gears when I rebuilt my 12 bolt.

I want the car to be fun and I like to shift a lot! I am going to do 80% of my driving within 20mi. from home. I am really wanting to do 4.56s, but I tend to go to extremes and paddle backwards, I hear what you are saying and remember my 4.10s with my 700R4s low first and remember it wasn't fun, but then again I couldn't skip 1st...ever. I'll wait until I calm down to buy gears. Any body run 4.56s with a T56? Turns out that tranny is what they said it was 94-95 with an LT bellhousing. Just cleaned it all up and am formulating my plan. Any opinions on clutches...Spec...Mcleod....??

Jeez, this is getting confusing. There are a lot of litlle diffs between T56s that you don't learn until you have one. This May be tricky to retain Mech. clutch linkage.

Also be aware that installing the T56 will require the cutting of your transmission tunnel. Not just a little, but a lot!

If you want to retain the stock bellhousing and mechanical TOB look at McLeod adapter plate.
