Default Tie Rods vs Sway Bar

I finally got around to installing the front sway bar on the Chevelle and I ran into a little problem... the sway bar is hitting the outer tie rods.







I thought I had plenty of ground clearance but apparently my car sits too low with the SPC LCA's and shorter coil springs.



Have any of you run into this issue? I guess I'm going to have to get a new set of front coils to raise it up some. So much for the perfect stance!

I've run into this before.
The caster needs to be set correctly...too negative...get an alignment.

I definately need an alignment. I didn't want to have that done if I was going to have to get taller springs and end up having to align it again.

Herb it looks like and alighnment and slightly longer links should take care of your issue.

Actually Bill, more negative caster tips the spindle past vertical and more towards the front of the car, which would lower the steering arm & tie rod and provide more tie rod to sway bar clearance. However negative caster is not what you want for driveability!

The more positive caster you run, the further the spindle is tipped back which raises the steering arm & tie rod.

Looks to me like slightly longer end links are the fix... although the angular relationship between the end link & the lower control arm right now looks a bit excessive.

I just went throught this same thing .aftermarket control arms and coilovers , aftermarket sway bar etcetc ......ended up pitching the end links and getting adjustable heim end links made up to get angle and length correct .....sway bar end still needs to be parallel to ground

Right or wrong I had alignment done before swaybar mounting ??

Did you put the heim end links together yourself or does someone make them for our application?

Yes made the link myself ......sorta, Mike at TRZ who made my control arms added the tabs to the control arms after that just some alum 1/2'"bar stock threaded to make up the links

You may have stated this earlier but what sway bar are you using? It looks like a 68-72 a-body sway bar.

It's the sway bar that was on the car when I got it so I assume it's for a 66. Of course, since I had it powder coated it's probably the wrong one!

I will say prior to removing it for the SPC/ATS upgrade, there was no interference that I noticed with the stock suspension components.

What if you fliped the sway bar... So the curved end slips under the tie rod then use shorter end links...You'll have to check suspension travel... But if you have some stiff springs it may be OK.. Or add a limiting strap.... Just a thought.. may not work.. but I will be running into the same situation shortly....

Herb - I had the same problem - I switched up to a 2 7/8" end link - no more problem.....

I started on the alignment yesterday but didn't finish it. Once that's done, I'll take a closer look at the end links.
