Hey all,
Does anyone out there in Chevelle land have any info on whether or not a 1967 SS 427 Chevelle was ever made, and if so how many and what options? Thanks in advance for any info. Best, Michou

None from the factory. Urban legend. No one has yet come forward with one with proof. Most you see out there were transplants by dealers or special companies like Motion. A quick search on SS427 should bring up lots of reading material for you.

All the emblems from a full sized car bolt right onto the Chevelle and look original. A friend has a nice black '67 Chevelle with a 427 and all the trim. Looks fantastic. It's just a shame that GM didn't use the L72 engine from the start in the Chevelles and Camaros. It was a natural. Our old 427 makes our L78 feel like a pussy cat and the gas mileage was about the same.

Not only was there no 427 425hp Chevelles factory built but many say that there were no 427 425hp full size passinger cars made. (1967)
If there were any 1967 L72 Impala/Biscayne made it would be a very small number. This is odd because they did make '66 '68 '69 427 425hp full size passinger cars A bunch of hi po dealers were doing 1967 L72 Camaro transplants so there must have been a few 1967 L72 Chevelle transplants done also |

Back in 1967 I was in Nurse Chev-Olds in Whitby Ontario. The salesman wanted me to order a 427 435 hp Biscayne coach. He claimed that it was the only way to get this engine in a full sized Chev. I have never heard of anyone having this combination ever. I don't even know where he got the idea that the car/engine combination could be ordered. The idea had to come from somewhere. In the late '60s Nurse used to be home to the UOP Shadow CanAm cars when they raced at Mosport. Nurse sold a red COPO Camaro in '69 so they were a little bit up on the performance world back then.

Plant then and we built them there. As a kid it was dreamland to work in a Chevy factory. |

Something to remember: GM had a ban on putting anything larger than 400 cubic inches in the A-body cars, until 1970.

I worked for a guy by the name of Merle Duprey many many years ago who bought and sold musclecars, Vettes, etc.
One that I never forgot was a '65 Impala (Caprice?) with a 425hp solid lifter 396 and a 4 spd. Thing was unresotred and original as you can get. Damn that thing sounded good. Id be inclined to belive it was the real deal.

My dad and uncle used to race a 67 Biscayne 427, they bought it just for racing, 4 speed, rubber floor bench seat...they pulled the engine soon after they got it, had a bunch of go-fast goodies put in it, and turned 11's with it, on whatever crappy tires they used back then. Held some records here in South Dakota and over near Minneapolis, or so the story goes. I've seen some pics, but it was a long, long time ago. I'd absolutely love to see anything like that in person, there's nothing close to that where I'm at.
Thinking about that is about the only time I've ever wished I was 20 years older, so I could've owned something like that! Those are my all time favorite car stories, the odd-ball 60's cars with monsters under the hoods, and granny bench seats! PS--that 427 went into my the 70 Chevelle that now belongs to my nephew, my dad bought the Chevelle in around 73, they were done racing, and they sold the Biscayne and kept the engine....the 307 went belly up, so in went the 427, 3 speed on the column, open 3:08 rear end....this was the car my mom drove 3 kids around in! Gas was cheap, so they didn't mind getting 3-4mpg. They kept it in the car until my oldest brother graduated, and sold the 427 to buy a 350 so they could give it to him, and he wouldn't kill himself. From what my dad has told me, the Chevelle was a nightmare if you stood on it, the one 14" rear tire didn't stand a chance, no matter how fast you were going. More than once he said he ended up facing the wrong way on the street! He told me once he was going up a small hill, at about 35mph, and it had some seperation joints in the road. He hit about 3 of them, and the fourth was just enough of a bounce to make his foot heavier on the gas, and round it went. No damage, just dirty underpants. He never drove it in the rain, it wouldn't go anywhere. Looking back on the whole deal, he says, "that was dumb!" hahaha Justin

I don't recall any documented 1967 L72 cars in any model.
The Corvette went to the L71 tri carb engine in 1967. Some say they remember 1967 Police 427 tri carb Impalas but not sure if they were 400hp or 435hp. Even looking at Chevelle L78 production numbers, if I remember right, 1967 was really low year at about 600. 1968 and 1969 L78s were 7000-9000 range. Even 1970 L78 was over 2000 and they only made them until the LS6 was in production. For some reason, it seems there was some type of cut back on SHP engines in 1967 |
