Default 67 12 bolt rear end 4:10 gear posi

Just wondering what a 67 12 bolt rear end posi would be worth. I have a 67 that came on my 68 and am thinking of changing it out to the correct year. It's got new seals and bushings, blasted and painted. Brand new painted cover. I guess 67 is a year specific rear? Should be worth a bit more than 68-72?

thanks
CC

What are the numbers? There were two 67 rears.

A little narrower, and yes worth more than the 68 rear.

The 1967 Chevelle uses a different spring mount on the rear axle housing which makes them unique to 1967. If a 1967 rear axle housing is used in a 1964-1966 Chevelle you will have to install 1967 Springs. If someone is building a Correct 1967 Chevelle, this rear will be more valuable to him because it is a one year axle.

Here's the link to some pictures with the numbers.

http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209710

They read: NF 3894939, KF 0512 B, GM 8, D257

From what others have said, the housings was cast on D(April) 25, 1967. My book says its KF (posi traction 3:55 ratio large ring gear) 05(May) 12th day B(buffaloplant), it's a half inch narrower than the 68. It's the earlier version.

I still need to ask how much.

Oops, I forgot about this pic that someone said translated into the gears being 4:10

Were 67 spring mounts different than 68-72? I know the spring mounts are different from 64-66 years but wasn't aware they were different from 68-72.

I agree that it's probably worth more to a 67 owner due to its uniqueness.

I have seen rebuilt 12 bolts posi's for 66-67's go for anywhere between $1500 - $1800 on e-bay and people are buying them. Aftermarkert rears from Strange and Currie go for at least that if not more. As others have said, those out there that want the correct rear for their car will spend the dough for it.

Dale, I too have never seen 68-72 perches different than '67s.
I have a '70 12b posi in my garage which has the same perches as my '67 12b posi. [overall length wider but perches same]
I put the '70 12b in the '67 back in the early '80s and finely replaced with a "correct" '67
12b about 9 years ago.
That '67 rear should get you a '68 rear with some $$ to spare.
Count the teeth for ratio.

My 67 housing (#N3894939) spring perches are the same as 68 & up style. I have 65-67-70 12 bolt housings on the garage floor with only the 65 perch being different.

Kinda what I thought. I had some model/year wider rear in my 67 for quite a number of years before finding a 67 and simply swapped the axle housing - kept the springs, shocks, upper/lower arms, etal.

FWIW, I've seen several different measurements for early and late rears with differences ranging between 1-inch and 2-inchs total width. I measured a 67 and came up with 60" from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface and 53 1/4 from backing plate to backing plate. I've seen publications with early rears at 60.5 outside-to-outside and later rears with 61.5 to 62.5 reported; the late 1-inch difference may have been due to wider rear brake drums (?).

IMO it's easier to get the casting number to see if it's an early 'narrow' rear or a later 'wide' rear.

For early I use 54 1/4" between backing brake mounting surfaces (no backing plate) and 55 1/4" on later housings. The tape will need to be pulled straight to get this number so is easiest with cover off.

I use 60" axle flange to axle flange on early and 61" on late, no brake drums.

FWIW - I recently read that if you can get two fingers between the backing plate flange and shock mount it's the wider 68-72 housing. Curiosity got me and I just happen to have a 1967 and 1970 12 bolt housing sitting in the garage. The 67 measures about 1 3/8" between flange and shock mount and the 70 about 1 3/4". I tried the finger measurement trick and it works.

I totally agree the casting number is the simplest.

Not to get off topic here guys, but I provided the casting numbers and only one guess so far, which was $1500-1800.

So, is that about right?

my 68 rear 12 bolt 4.11 posi is 54 1/2 in wide and its a 68 rear end too i got lucky on that one trying to find a 12 bolt for my car my dads friend hooked me up with that one for only $600 its a really nice rear end too i think the original gears that were in the case though were like 3.55s or 3.42s you should see this guys basement hes got a 25' long and 10' high wall with nuthin but muncies sitting on shelves he must have over 50 of them on there and he also has 3 L89 setups for the 427. Then he has a rack down there with 5 12 bolt rear ends hanging on there then he has a bunch of NOS GM parts for engines and stuff this is who we bought our 1970 Chevelle SS454 off of

Sorry about that!

I would guess $1200 to $1600 if your leaving the brakes. I'm in an area with a very limited market so I might be low. If you go internet packaging/shipping causes problems. It's a one year only housing and 67 Chevelles bring good prices....4.10's might be an issue for some. I've sold two of the wider ones locally and got $450 & $550 for rebuilders, neither had posi.
