Default Best BBC aluminum heads???

Hello, I am rebuilding my 396 engine for my 69 chevelle and just found out my heads need some work. I really dont want to put any money into the stock heads i would rather invest in new heads. I am running a hydraulic roller xtreme energy comp cam. The grind is XR288. Im also running the pro magnum roller rockers with the cam. I was just curious what the best aluminum heads for the money were for bbc. Ive heard Edelbrocks are good for the money. Would just like some more input. Thanks....

I run brodix racerite oval ports, most think they are too small for 505 cubes, at 3860lbs it dont e.t. too bad!!

I ran the racerite oval ports for a couple years (one of the first sets they sold) with my 468 (ls6 bottom end) and ran low 11's on the motor. With the original square port LS6 heads 11.6's were my best. The motor was a solid roller.
For a 396 they would really work well I believe as well. The stock location is a very cool factor as well. It also leaves room for you to one day increase displacement.

Brodix Racerite ovals......I don't have them, but I think they would be best for your application. And I would buy them right from our own Mike Lewis aka "Wolfplace"
Room for growth and stock port location.

Hey Bob thats good going! have got a set of these heads ready for a 496 build-up on my '68 4 speed Vette. A few have said these were a little on the small side - but you seem to be doing ok with them, makes me feel a little bit more confident.

I have the racerites and really like them. Huge improvement over my original 290 castings. The only thing you need to consider with the small bore of the 396 is to get the smaller 2.19 intake valves to help with shrouding. I have the 115cc and even though it lowered my compression a little more than a point, it was still a big gain. I did get mine from Mike Lewis (wolfplace) and he's a pleasure to deal with. Mike recommended the CNC porting option also.

The heads right now are 3993820 castings and the date on them is 1971. Ive done some reading and they seem to be alright heads but my I had them checked over and my machine shop said they would recommend having new guides and a vavle job done and they quoted me $400-600. I know this is much cheaper than aluminum heads but I would rather put that money towards alot nicer set of heads.

I have a set of 3904390 heads closed chamber and Was told with alittle pocket porting and clean up they will support lots of HP.With the price of alumimum to me its not worth the price unless I needed 600-700 HP.Even then Im sure there are some castiron heads that can handle that.

I was thinkin of having them ported, but thats just more money into a stock iron head since i dont know much about pocket porting. From what Ive read I would be better off just putting the money towards aluminum heads. Also later I am thinkin about building a bigger cubic inch motor, so if i decided to go with bigger valves would this cause much of a problem with my small 396??

I would think if your going bigger cubes later then go with the aluminum. You can still get pretty good money for your castiron heads to go toward the aluminum.
