Default New Bench Seat Cover - Seat Belt Holes?

I'm finishing up a freshen up of the interior on my 68 Chevelle Convertible and I can't remember for the life of me how the seat belts go through the front bench seat.

There is a vinyl/plastic grommet type of thing that I left on the seat belts, and I believe it goes into the bench seat somehow, but I do not see any slits or openings in the new covers for this to mount to.

Do the seat belts actually pass through the bench seat or am I not remembering this correctly (took the interior out almost 2 years ago)?

I bought the seat covers from YearOne - has anyone else bought a front bench seat cover from them and had this problem?

If anyone can help out (pictures would be great), I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Jon

Same here. You always do this on a new bench seat cover. If you put your hand down between the seat and the upright, you'll feel where the belt needs to go.

Thanks for the responses.

Does anyone have a picture of what the finished product looks like (or know of a place where I can see a picture)? If I have to cut the new material, I want to do it right the first time! Also, after you slice the material, what keeps it from splitting/running after it's cut?

I sure wish I had asked the interior guy to keep the original seat covers for me. It's weird how I was thinking about asking him to save it just in case, but then I never did ask...oh well...nothing I can do about it now!

Seb - I live up in Vernon - not too far from you.

Wow - talk about luck! I took the day off from work today to run errands and to work on the Chevelle. Well, it just so happens that while I was out running errands, a guy with a beautiful 69 Chevelle convertible pulls up next to me in the parking lot of the bank. He had the top down and the car clearly had a bench seat in it. So I went over to him and talked to him about the car and he let me take a ton of pictures of the various things I wasn't sure about on my car (cell phone cameras are great!) - including how the seat belts go through the bench seat.

It turns out that he was the original owner of the car - his wife bought it for him as a wedding gift! It's no wonder that he's still married after 37 years - a woman like that sure sounds like a keeper to me!

Thanks again for the replies.

Went by Ausleys today. All bench seat covers they get have to have the seat belt holes cut.

Well this has raised a question for me.... should my 66 have grommets where the belt passes through? The seats had been recovered once before I got the car and they weren't on there when I bought it.

Thanks Bill,
It makes sense, to keep the belts from possibly tearing the opening more.
I can't see why a folding back would be different, guess I'll have to investigate this further and check aftermarket availability.

on my 64...there was a cardboard piece behind the vinyl that had the slits cut in it for the seat belts and had small flat metal tabs crimped/glued on it for the screws on the plastic seat belt grommets to secure to. when i redid the seat covers i ditched the cardboard because it was falling apart. i plan to run the screws straight though the vinyl, just for looks, but will use some weatherstrip adhesive to actually glue the grommets to the vinyl. lastly, if you're concerned about the vinyl splitting, you can use a u-shaped needle and thread and on the edges of the slits.

Nope.... more concerned about the proper look.

you would still have the proper look because the plastic grommet will cover up everything, that's what i intended to mean originally.

Can someone tell me if 72's also had these plastic trim rings? If so, I think we need them. Anyone with an old seat or know where we can get them? Thanks.

i went to a junk yard who specializes in 60's GM cars. i found that a lot of the cars had similar plastic grommets, i think i pulled a pair off an oldsmobile. only problem was i got a pair that were green, and tried painting them black but the paint just cracks off, so i'm not using any grommet right now.

You might not believe this but we have the green interior. Contact me and let me know how much you want for them. I have an ad in the wanted section. Thanks again, Marc.
