Question How to tell a True Monte Carlo SS???

I have a friend who has Three 80's Monte Carlos and one is an SS. He is looking at another 86 or 87 SS and I am concerned it isn't a True SS. It has a column shift and bench seats???
The seller say it IS a true SS. I know he could get the VIN number, but how to look and tell if it is.

i'm not sure what the code is for an SS, but there should be a sticker inside the trunklid with the codes for all the options installed on that car at the factory.
but, off hand, i'd say to look for a tight ratio steering box (my 84 Regal T Type is about 3 turns lock to lock and uses the same box as a Monte SS), big sway bars front and rear, 3.73 rear gears, TH200-4r overdrive trans with a certain code on the tag riveted to it (i can't remember what it is, and the trans could have been swapped out in the last 2 decades anyways), body mounts in all the locations including right above the rear axle, and of course the body package (nose, rocker panels, trunk lid spoiler).
a lot of Monte SS's were built with a column shift with 60/40 split bench, so that isn't something that makes it not an SS. but i think they all got the full gauge package.

Believe it or not the option code on the broadcast sticker inside the trunk lid would be Z16 (yes just like the 1965 SS396 Chevelle). At least that is what I remember when I owned one. All the rest of the info given is spot on for the mechanicial pieces, and there were quite a few column shift bench seat Monte SS.

8th digit in the VIN will tell you. No G? It isn't an SS. Gotta have the HO 305 VIN letter G.

How to make sure your 83-88 SS is really an SS.

Make sure the 8th digit in the VIN is a "G"
Check the trunk lid sticker and make sure the following codes are present, also make sure the VIN on this sticker matches the VIN on your car and the VIN on the driver's door. B4V L69 F41
Any of them can be checked via Carfax too (but that info does not give you the SS claim just the history).

I have owned a few of them constantly since 1990. First one was a split bench column shift car. The Second one IIRC was at first but got converted to buckets. Current one is a low mile peach with the bucket/floor shift. All of them were lowered with Bell Tech stuff.

I'm diggin' way back in the memory bank here..........when I ordered mine, bench seat and column shift was available. I got buckets and console shift (and lots of other stuff), but I don't remember them being available with out the 305HO (wow, 180 hp). I've still got mine, and the tag is still in the trunk if you need any info from it.

i really want to get an 84 SS to park next to my 84 t Type.
i know of one for sale that is the same color as my car, but it has buckets and a console where my t has the split bench and column shift. other than that difference, they are practically the same car. well, that and my T has less cylinders and more power.
but a Monte SS would be a great home for the LT1 i've got sitting out in the barn, maybe destroked down to a 302 with a turbo or two hanging on it..

and it would be relatively cheap to build- all i'd need is a Caprice parts car with an L99 in it, and i'd have the 3" stroke crank and 5.94 rods. hang a set of forged flat top 350 pistons on it, get it balanced, and throw it together. with a .030 overbore, it would actually be around 305ci- right back at the stock displacement for the Monte..
