Not sure what you mean by 'data plate', but no to both the Fisher Body plate (a.k.a. trim tag or cowl tag) and no the the VIN plate on the dash.

Actually, it is possible to verify on the Cowl Tag of a kansas or Baltimore built SS.

Although debated, (which is why these gentlemen didn't list it) my guess is a 99.9 +% accuracy rate

"L" Kansas
"D" Baltimore

If you have a Baltimore or Kansas built SS, do a search on these letters for information pertaining to it.

I don't want to open up a can of worms here but I have 2 Baltimore built SS cars with build sheets and both have only a "B" on the cowl tags. Both cars came without stripes. I'm more inclined to think the "D" represented stripes even though it has not been proven and probably can't be. To answer your question, there is no way to document a 1970 without paperwork and even that is getting harder to do with all the fake documents floating around.

Sorry 69396SS but all that you are doing is perpetuating an urban legend when it comes to authenticating SS cars. My documented '70 SS Baltimore built car has an "L" on the trim tag. Does that mean it was really built in Kansas? And the only "D" on my tag is part of the body build date. Until someone can come up with hard facts, the L, D, or even B is purely conjecture and wishful thinking on some peoples parts. Enough of this nonsense. Some guys are naive enough to buy into it.

You can tell if it was a 6-8 cylinder by the vin, factory 8 cyliner would be 136 A 133 would be a 6 cylinder from the factory. If i'm not mistaken.

Hey Team Members,

This is the same guy that posted a thread (Chevelle Tech - 1970 Build Sheet) asking how he could get a phonied-up SS build sheet. Now he's asking what the trim tag should say to "make it a real SS". Next step is he'll be selling the car on E-bay as an authentic SS for big bucks and some poor schlub will fall for it. Those of you who encourage this type of behavior by posting legitimate replies ought to be ashamed of yourselves. All you are doing is aiding and abetting.

Yes fish, you could tell the difference between a real SS or not because it was written on the cowl tag. It will say "SS 350", "SS 396", "SS 454" or "SS 502". If it doesn't say that on your cowl tag then it's not an SS.

I admittingly only read about the Baltimore cars in a current thread in Restoration Corner, but thought the Kansas was pretty much nailed down.

I researched Kansas because I had a Kansas 69.

The only thing I ever saw against it was hear-say with Data from 100's of SS and Malibu's for it.

Anyway.....

That is simply just NOT True, you made that up!

Where in the He-double hockey sticks did you see "phonied-up" ?

I read what he asked and he asked the very same question that hundreds of other new-bee's before him have asked.

We all started out knowing nothing.

Roger copy as far as the VIN goes, but remember that doesn't apply to trim tags. I have numerous even 3rd-digit trim tags that the VIN shows an odd 3rd-digit for a 6-cyl; i.e., 136xx trim tags and 135xx VIN. Trim tags have nothing to do with V8 or L6 status.
