Red face el camino weight capacity

How much can I put in the bed of a 1972 el camino? Can I set a small block and powerglide in it and drive 750 miles?

i think you would be fine, just keep it to the front of the bed to help distribute the weight on all 4 wheels.

I once carried a 400 sbc, a LS6, one 12 bolt for '66 Impala, and 2 large toolboxes (a very good day at the wrecking yard!). I had the Hurst air shocks pumped up to about 150psi and it rode level. I wouldn't recommend that for everyday driving though!

Make sure there are no fluids in the engine or tranny. John Law doesn't like that...

You should have no problem with that load.

This reminds me though....
I wish I could rememeber his name. But a year ago a member who has now restored his el camino showed pictures of what a workhorse it was before. He had pics of mounding wood and pics of mounding dirt and gravel in the back of his el camino. The front was sky high, and the back was riding on the bump stops with the tires all ballooned out. Not the safest car to drive, but he really hauled some huge loads. Dont doubt a Camino! They really are workhorses.

I have a pair of Air Lift bags stuffed inside the rear springs of my 70'. Hauled a complete 454 w/4 speed truck tranny in the bed, with very little front end rise. Bags were inflated to maximum recommended psi.
