Yes, its easy on one hand, but its not something that Id call simple. You gotta be willing to follow through.

I say yes cause with the technology out there now, you can definitely build a 450 horsepower 383 using only off the shelf parts If you invest in good stuff and take the time to make it all right. But, even with good parts, it doesnt always happen easy. Itll take some work in doing up a good combo and thorough and maticulous assembly and tuning will help to make it all good.

With your proposed combo, Id be surprised with over 420 horsepower on an honest dyno. Granted, thats nothin to laugh at. A lot of the 400 horsepower engines you hear about "on the streets" are in reality lucky to make that much power. Many do, but many dont. There are a lot of 13 second cars impersonating 11 second cars out there.

The important thing is that reguardless of power on the dyno....your combo definitely is one thats capable of going fast in the average street car. It wouldnt take a miracle to run 12's. Just a good tune and a proper drivetrain with traction. If the one dyno says it makes more power than I guess, than so be it. If another dyno says it makes less....than so be it! But the combo looks like the typical one that has the steam to get into the 12's on pump gas in a driveable street car. Reguardless of all that though, Id still expect 420 ish at best on a well dialed in tune on an honest dyno.

My buddy built a Edelbrock RPM power package out of a 383 and it doesn't feel like the 425hp its quoted to have. Maybe 375hp out of it. Short block is stock 400 crank,Eagle SIR rods,SRP pistons, RPM headed,cammed,air-gap and 750 mechanical demon carb! It has a MSD pro billet dist,6AL box and wires. Long tube hooker competion headers into dual 2 1/2 exhaust. It might turn a 12.9 with sticky tires and his 3.73/posi but no 450hp.

Its a good little motor but I'd use different off the shelf parts to get 450hp.

the Edelbrock cams are not well thought of, might big holding him back some. Edelbrock engineering is often very conservative but but many hot rod parts companies could take lessons from their quality control. IMHO, all that. He could get a big boost out of switching to one of Harolds cams.

Chevy High Performance had an article in the August 2006 issue intitled " Power Curves" where they dynoed an engine like yours. Not sure of the compression ratio. It produced 450 hp @ 5500rpm and 490 lb ft @ 3900. Had 475 lb ft @ 3300 Rpm. You should have a pretty strong engine and will be alot of fun.

I'm thinking about 375-425 ish at the crank (gross).
I think with a better cam it would make better hp but you'll lose streetability.

go to my website an click on show cars button, then Richard's 71 Camaro

http://maroond.net/

This car has a motor quite similar to what you are building. It made 450/450 at the crank. on a very stingy dyno.

It's also running a 3500 stall Coan converter, needs about 4000 stall. It runs ok, just not as snappy as I like.

my combo dyno'd @ 292 horsepower and 340 ft lbs at the rear wheels.

355 all cast prob 40,000 miles
holley aluminum heads 68cc chamber 2.02 1.94
lunati matching cam 490 lift (235/240 duration i think)
10.1 compression should be close.
Airgap intake 750 Demon
1.5 roller rockers.

running thru B&M 3000 stall T-350
12 BOLT 3.31 Gears.

pull was made in second gear. SAE corrected

times below. that was with 28 inch tall ET STREETS and a one legger. 60ft was a 2.30 (it was around 40 degrees very cold track)

Your combo will be very similar to mine I imagine. Best of 12.42 @ 107 with 1.68 60' time. I have a freind at the track with a nova that also has a 383. He has the RPM heads like yours but the same XE 284 cam that I have. He could only run a best of 12.99 in the same conditions that I was running 12.60's. I think the heads are the big difference here. The RPM's seem to underperform a little bit compared to competetive products. (Don't take this as an endorsement of the Fast Burns...)
