Default Installing C clip eliminators on 12 bolt

Does anyone have any pointers on installing c clip eliminators on a 12 bolt for A bodies? Thanks.

I'm about to do the same thing so I'll pass along what I learned. For starters, try doing a search on this site as there are several threads on this that are pretty informative. You have to cut the axle housing a bit to install the eliminators.

After thinking it through I decided to pay to have it done. I'm pulling the rear tomorrow and taking it to a perf. shop. They charge $300 (I'm in DC where prices are high so it may be cheaper where you are). The guy at the shop said most folks mess up when they cut the axle tubes, said this is the critical part for potential leakage in the future.

Best of luck!

Most c clip eliminator kits require cutting all but about 1/4 inch off of the end of the housing that sticks out past the brake flange. This is the parts where the original axle bearing goes, so once this is done you can't go back. This needs to be cut as square as possible. You will probably have to do it with a hack saw.

Don't be afraid to do this one yourself. Just take your time when making the cut. Myself, I used an air die grinder with the thin cutting wheel. Prepped the tube ends by cleaning with Brakleen, then applying tape as a cut line to follow. Finished by dressing the cut with a fine flat file.
Be meticulous when prepping the backing plate for the silicone sealer. Mine have not leaked, and I drive where ever I want. My success was on good advice from Bob West.
If you do remove the housing, take the time to have the tubes welded. That's how I know mine don't leak. Twisted the dr side tube in the housing and had to tear down for repair.
Good luck!

So the eliminators will go on the end of the axle where the brake area sits?

Sorry I am new to this one.

Yes, they will sandwich the brake backing plate between the eliminator and the flange on the end of the tube.

your actually removing the area where the old bearing/seal was, and replacing it with a block that bolts on where the backing plate goes, and this block now houses the bearing on the axel
if your not going to race the car, they make aftermarket c clip axles that are pretty strong, best choice for intended use-the stock ones held up for years behind 454/450's, i can only imagine the new ones are much better

i just talked to Strange today about another c-clip eliminator kit, and i talked to him about the usual leak problems and if they made a heavy duty c-clip axle-he told me the c-clip axles were not as large as the c-clip eliminator axles, due to the bearings used-1.4" vs 1.77" dia-he said they use a tapered bearing now with a diff seal, better for the street

I called Moser today about eliminators and the sales person flat-out told me their kit will not seal with street use. I appreciated his honesty and told him so.

I called Strange next and talked to an incredibly informative guy in sales named Joe. He said their kit was designed for circle track and road racing and walked me through what needs to be done. I bought the kit and axles from him for $489.50.

Just thought I'd pass it along.

Did you already buy them? If so you may try a return. They seemed like pretty good folks.

They were pretty up front with me about the fact that they were designed for drag use, i.e. straight line stuff. Again, I appreciated their honesty, although the advertising on some of their distributor's sites could be a little more forthright IMHO.

Yeah I already have them.

So does ANYONE make a c clip eliminator for 12 bolt that WILL work on street and track? Or am I going to have to bastardize my car by hanging Ford and/or Mopar parts on it?

Do a search! You will find many horror stories about leaks from ALL brands of C-Clip eliminators! Best to have the ends cut off and Ford 9" style ends welded on - a far superior way to go. Moser, Strange and Mark Williams (to name a few) make them.

Or go hang a Ford 9 inch or a Dana 60 underneath....there a reason why 12 bolts suck....

Do a search.....do a search
