Default Chevelle Rack and Pinion

I saw a blurb on the SEMA site about Flaming River winning a New Product award for a Rack and Pinion steering set-up for A-Bodies. I emailed them for more info and got this reply:

Our new power rack&pinion kit for the 'A" bodys' is a bolt in kit, that includes the power rack, cradle, paintable tilt steering column, pump, remote resevoir,u-joints,shafting, and all of the needed hardware to install the kit with.
The kit does not include the pump bracket,or hoses, but are available.
The kit has a part number of FR313KT,for a price of $2,750.00.
The kits will be available for shipping at the end of this month.

Thoughts?

Yikes thats alot of cash but the fact that it comes with a flaming river column helps a little bit. Really though when compared to a Lee steering box and good poly steering components the rack has little to no advantage performance wise.

Didn't I read somewhere over the last few months that Speed Direct (Steeroids) was working on a power rack and pinion for A bodies? I think they even invited people to leave their email addresses so that Speed Direct can notify their potential customers when the unit is available.

Anyone have any further information on this topic?

No bumpsteer numbers? For $2700, I'd like to know I'm improving something.

Given the steering arms of that setup are MUCH longer than the LCA's I'd actually expect to see bumpsteer worse than a stock setup.

Also, I'd love to see the u-joint & shaft setup and how it snakes around the headers...

What about TRZ kit for $850.00??? Anyone use this kit? Is it just for drag racing? They have a "bump steer kit" with it, I wonder how well it works.

I checked the Flaming River R&P out pretty closely at SEMA and picked their brains about it. According to them it`s a direct bolt in and can be used with the stock column (which shoud save some money). They avoided the huge bumpsteer issue you normally run into with A,G and 2nd gen F bodys (where the inner tie rod end pivot points need to be in line with the lower control arm pivot axis) but making what amounts to a center link with the ends bolted to the ends of the R&P. Clever really,I had one of those "whack myself in the forehead moments" when I saw it. Again, according to them the inner "tie rod ends" (heims) are in *exactly* the stock location so no gains or losses there (in theory). I still want to see one actually bolted into a car though. Looking at our test chassis I can`t picture how it would fit in there without messing up the ackerman. The almost straight up input shaft will probably require 2 double U joints and 2 support bearings. Interesting but the jury is still out. Mark SC&C

I thought I saw somewhere that FAt Man Fab sold a front frame stub that uses MII frontend parts with a rack/pinion. That would be cheaper I would think since MII parts are very popular with streetrods. Anyone know about these or have experience with them? I used their x-member kit for a old 57 chevy p/u I had and it was great but frame stubs are a different story.

I wonder what that cradle, and the whole unit weighs??? A R&P's only real benefit is its weight, but I'd bet with that cradle, it weighs as much as a box, maybe more?

you are right the weight thing went out the door with the cradle. Too bad they could not come up with a better mounting idea. I just wonder if that is an off the shelf rack from some kind of car or a custom made rack
