Default Harborfreight hvlp spray gun?

Just looking for any feedback on the Harborfreight hvlp spray gun for those that own one or have used one in the past. I'm a beginner (never painted before) and only intend on using the gun I purchase a few times so I don't want to spend the $$$ for a top of the line gun. This gun is on sale now for $39.99 and thought it may be all I need.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=43430

So, what's the verdict?

Thanks for any input!

-Craig

I have one also. I don`t know too much about painting and setting up the gun but I had my painter buddy set it up for me and he said it was a great gun. They are very similar to the Sharpee guns.

I've got the same gun as well. My brother and I shot some three stage paint with it no problems once we got it set up.

am i reading that right?.....tip size .054 ?, about a third of what you'd normally see?, it must be a typo...check out their high dollar gun...tips from 1.3 to 1.7
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94967
even this detail gun has a 1.0
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=90978
but, now i see this gun
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94967
spec'd at 1mm (.039) so i guess its all in the labeling and .054 would be about right...youd think at least in one companies catalog theyd have the specs in the same measurements, i see one doesnt even have a tip or nozzle size mentioned...anyway, good luck and let us know how it turns out for ya

The cheap guns are a crap shoot, some will shoot good while others won't-even within the same design and part number. Quality control isn't a big priority with these gun manufacturers. Oftentimes metal shavings from the machining operations will be left inside during assembly causing the gun to never shoot right. Or the aircap hole alignment is slightly off giving a inconsistant pattern. Look for a 1.4 fluid tip. Astro also makes some good spraying guns for the price. At one time I was using guns sold by Matco tools at about $100 and some would spray good while others wouldn't even though they looked identical and shared the same part number-again poor quality control makes for inconsistant performance. Most of the cheap guns are airhogs but astro seems to have fairly good designs.

Your best bet would be to fork out the cash for an Iwata or Sata and use it then put it on ebay- it's amazing what used guns bring on ebay.

i noticed this sharpe at eastwood which looks like a decent low buck gun...if you consider a c-note low buck, which, for a paint gun i would think it is:

Go for it it's only 40 bucks if it sprays funny run a tip cleaner for a torch thru it to clean out any burs.
A good painter can use any gun (doubt you could get him to do it) so practice with it alot.

There has been a lot of threads about this gun on Hotrodders.com. Probably more than you care to read about. Check their message board under the "body-exterior" section and do a search. There are a ton of guys who will tell you this is a great value and actually a good gun. There are always a few who are unwilling to soil their hands with anything less than a $400 Sata, but to each his own. If you are on a budget and have the compressor for it, I'd go for it. I'm probably gonna get one myself oneday. I use a $100 Astro HVLP gun that works like a champ.

I guess i'd be in the category of one "unwilling to soil their hands..." seeing as how my SATA is a little above the $400 dollar range. i've never sprayed with any of the harborfreight or astro guns, and i'm not saying i wouldn't, but after using my gun; it just feels good in your hand, sprays both base coat and clear coat so awesome... i really don't need to use any other gun. (well, except for primer and stuff)

John did make a good point though. make sure you have a compressor that will be able to keep up with the VOLUME of air that the gun needs. it's not just the psi, it's the volume of air. (HVLP = high volume low pressure)

I think it's a matter of getting started that counts I have about 10 guns .
The better you get the better your tools get so when you get to the point that you spend $400+ on a gun you know why you did.

If you you use the Harbor gun for nothing else but priming you will be money ahead. I have two that I have used for four years with good success.
