Default Mounting Horseshoe shifter

I have a 68 chevelle SS 396 that was orignially a 4 speed and someone changed it into an automatic with a turbo 350 and a b&m type shifter on it currently. I recently bought an automatic console with a horseshoe shifter which I would like to install. When I looked under the carpet I saw the hole in the floorboards for the manual shifter, and I would assume that that hole will be too big for the horshoe shifter. Can someone direct me on what I should do to get my horseshoe shifter to fit. Should I put a piece of sheet metal over the hole and mount it from there, or are there other options. Any help would be appreciated.

You may need to find a donor floorpan to patch the d/t tunnel....i think you can buy that portion aftermarket for the four speed; not sure about the auto...goodmark or year one maybe? Perhaps someone else will chime in here...

Put a piece of sturdy sheet metal (not the soda can stuff) over the hole, secure it to the floor using the original screw holes for the shifter boot if you can.....then put the console in place, get the shifter where you want (make sure it goes thru all gears w/o hitting the console), mark your holes, drill and install shifter with some self tapping sheet metal screws....
