Default 67 chevelle big block headers

I have a 67 chevelle with a 396 and my hooker super pro comp headers are hitting the steering rod coming from the fire wall, does anybody else have problems fitting these headers or have a solution to my problem?

If that's the only place they hit, you're lucky. You just have to dimple the header a little for clearance.

I had a set of Hookers in my 67 when I first rebuilt it and had the same type problem. The 'medallion' on either 1 or 3 hit the steering column. Wouldn't even let the engine drop to the mount unless the column was turned so the narrow side was vertical. Once engine was bolted down I couldn't turn the steering wheel at all. I wound up having it towed to an exhaust shop to have the medallion cut off and the tube dimpled. Stupidest place to put a useless piece of metal I've ever seen. I can't honestly remember anyone having luck with Hookers on a 67 BB.

I have a set of super comp #2213's with 2" primaries on my BB 67. They are up against the floor boards on the passenger side. I had to move a brake line on the drivers side. They were in there so tight I had almost no movement before I bolted them up. I didn't have any issues with the steering.

After all the hassle I still like them.

We have a 65 and 66 both with 454 engines, one is a 396 car and the 65 was a 283 car. We had the same problem with a very slight rubbing on the steering shaft but neither had the Hooker medalion in that spot. A good hard wack with a socket and hammer put a small dimple the right spot to correct the problem.

Seems like the super comp's are really hit and miss...I have a set on my 70,And they fit perfect.
I have a buddy who ordered a set for a 78 vette. They didnt even come close to fitting...Called Hooker...Sent them back,They sent out another set,These didnt come close to fitting either...But were hitting in different area's then the first set. Finally the fourth set were close enough to work with...Hooker asked him to fit them up...Clearance them where they needed it...And then send them back to be recoated.

I guess he was Hookers R&D department for the 78vette...

Cool Re: 67 chevelle big block headers

I like the fit and quality of Hedman Headers myself. My 67 Chevelle has 2" X 3" and they fit very nice. Only slight rubbing on the passenger side upper a-arm. It clearanced itself on the first cruise!

Im not sure if there would be much of a difference. But I have Super Comps in my 66SS and they fit fine. It is very close to the steering shaft but there was no clearancing on any header tubes needed.

Cool Re: 67 chevelle big block headers

I have a 65 with a BB and the hooker headers hit my steering shaft also. Took them out and laid a 1/2" extension on the tube and gave it a good whack and now it slitley touches.

Mee too. The Thorlesy headers dropped right in with only one small cut to shorten an upper control arm bolt that was sticking out a bit too far. The flanges are thick too. I have yet to lose a header gasket.
