Question HEI Spark plug wire??

Can anyone post a diagram of the firing order for a small block with a HEI distributor. I know the correct firing or, just not where to hook the wires back onto the cap. I up graded my 350 with a new cap and the coil is on top of the cap, but the only diagram I have to hook back up the spark plug wires, is for a points distributor. Will this diagram work??? Thanks for the help.. B.

The firing order is the same...
18436572 clockwise
Where #1 wire terminal is on the cap depends upon where the rotor was pointing and the position of #1 cylinder when the distributor was installed.

What Bill said, firing order doesn't change. Usually #1 is around the 4-5 o'clock position looking down on the distributor from the front. From there, like Bill said, clockwise around -8436572. #2 would end up being around the 1-2 o'clock position. No guarantee, that's just normal position.

Hey Dean, that isn't for ALL HEI's is it? I have a GM hei on mine and i hooked the wires up like that when i first got it (about 6 months ago) and i couldn't start the car. I moved the wires one spot to the left (looking down on the cap, clockwise) and it fired up and runs perfect.

Your dist is off probably a couple of teeth, since it runs and you can set the timing, leave it alone.

Took the advice, and I got the damm thing to fire... HURRAY, but it is still running a little ****ty. My question now is, do I just have to tweak the timing, and adjust the distributor a little here and there? Would the car run at all if I was not at or near top dead center?

I replied to you post in chevelle tech 2005. Yes it will run if close enough. Set the timing with a light and you should be all right.

It doesn't really matter which position #1 is in as long as the distributor can be rotated enough without interference and the wires will still reach.

You could start with #1 anywhere on the cap but the vacuum advance might hit on the firewall or the wires might be behind the dist. but you could still get the timing correct.

Thanks for all the info DEAN, really helped me out, the vacum advance is sitting around the 7 o'clock position right now, so hopefully it will be alright. Thanks for the reply's.
