We replaced the column shift on a 1969 Malibu with a B&M shifter. Now, needless to say, the back-up lights don't work (I don't think the neutral start switch does either, but I haven't checked). I know that the switch is near the base of the steering column, but it is rather large and I don't think I can get it to fit inside the b&m shifter housing.
I checked to see if b&m makes a b-u light switch but did not find one.
Questions:
1. Is there a back-up light switch, factory or non-factory available? p/n?
2. Is there an after-market steering column available (I didn't find one at ididit)? Should I just get a factory floor shift column, and if so, anybody know where?
For the answer to your second question. It depends on the year of car (and so do other answers) The problem with aftermarket columns is none of them (as far as i have seen) have a ignition key port or whatever it is called. Meaning you would need to put one in the dash. That is why IDIDIT has the early years but not later years.
You need 2 microswitches. One for backup and on for neutral safety. Just tap into existing circuits. They mount on the underside of my Starshifter. I did this on my 68 Malibu. Try these part #'s 80629, 80609, 80890 depending on what shifter you have. Try looking at www.jegs.com.
hey i just installed my b&m shifter in my 69 and it came with two micro switches in the hardware that came with the shifter backup switch and neutral and i ran the 2 green and 2 purple wires to them havent tried it yet (not quite there yet) but i do believe that will be your problem they attach to the driver side of the shifter down at the bottom.........
Ok, did some more research. Haven't found an aftermarket column BUT i did find a NEW floor shift column with the ignition and everything! Ground up has them!
