Default Engine smokes excessively when cold

I'm trying to figure out why my engine puts out so much blue smoke for the first 10 minuets or so when cold. Its pretty bad. I have a real small exhaust leak at the collector on each side and they both drip out real thick burnt oil also. No crossover and smoke is about equal on each bank. Im running a tunnel ram so it doesn't idle very pretty until i get some heat up top, which is expected, But it stops smoking when i get to 200* for a little bit. The engine (from what im told) only has about 500 miles on it since it was rebuilt. It didnt do this the first few times i strarted the motor. Think i have a leaky intake manifold gasket? or could it be something with the rings?

The intake gasket is a possibility as are valve stem seals.

re-torqued the intake, no difference there. I dont get why it only does it when its cold

Well maybe piston to cyl clearance is a little too much so when motor heats up and pistons & rings expand they seal a little better.

Or maybe it's a guide/v-seal issuse where a lot of oil runs down into cyls when motor post shutdown when it sits over night or for a few days then where you start it up it takes quite a while to burn all the oil out of the cyls/exhaust.

I would think if it was an intake gasket sealing issue it would smoke all the time and not just when cold.

Is it blue(oil) or more of a white (coolent) smoke and does it smell like oil or more of a sweet smell like if it was coolent?

Have you has to add coolent lately?

Are any plugs bone white when you chk them like you would see when coolent enters a hot cyl ?

Is there a lot of blowby from v-covers when motor is hot showing poor ring seal?

It is a very light blueish smoke, and doesnt have that burnt coolant smell.

Plugs look completely normal, i expected them to be somewhat of fouled.

Im running a PCV valve with a baffle, and i pulled it out to see if maybe if was still sucking oil through the baffle... didnt seem to be the case. There was a little bit of smoke coming from the hole when i took it out. I figued a little is normal, it didnt seem excessive.

I was talking to a friend and he suggested it may just be running extremly Rich when cold. He said he had a car that did and it ended up being the carb not set up right and smoked somewhat blue. This may be the case for me because im still dialing my carbs in, and i know there still off.

Sounds like valve guides/seals to me.... Engine is warm, running, then shut off....oil leaks past the seals, down the guides into the combustion chambers and burns/smokes the next time you start it....till it burns off.... Time for a valve job...

Hmm, is there any way to check for this without pulling the heads?

Retorquing the intake wont do it if its sucking oil through there, have to pull it and check to see whats going on.
