Default 400 sbc

I have a 400 SBC in my 69...

The starter bolt holes are egged pretty badly.

Is it repairable? Costly?

I would like to take it out and get ready for the BBC I have on the stand.

By egged, do you mean that the threads are stripped, or that the first 1/2 inch that is "fitted" is wallowed?

As a machinist, I could fix it by reaming the fitted part of the hole round and machining a bushing, but there is not a lot of room to play with there.

If the threads are stripped, you can heli-coil them and hope for the best. Since the Helicoil drill is larger than the fitted part of the hole, that will present a problem.

I guess your problem is the result of someone not using "starter bolts", or failing to tighten them correctly.

When I bought the car, ($1000) the previous owner did get it running but when I got it back to the shop, after taking it off the flatbed, the starter was hanging. I tried tightening the bolts, but they dont really tighten.

Threads were stripped, I have a helicoil in it now, and the bolts tighten up to a point, but I never took the motor out of the car to work on it properly.

The engine has been in my car since I bought it in 99. I havent put any miles on it yet, just quarters, paint, and an interior. I am doing a BBC now which will go in with the M22 I also have.

It is an early 400, if I remember 73 or 74. I also for some reason think its out of a Monza...dunno.

Shane:

Monza's did not come with 400 engines (to the best of my knowledge), seems as if they came with either a 267 or 305 as largest V-8. Maybe the 400 is from a Monte Carlo or Caprice. Anyway, I wouldn't do anything with it other than tell any prospective buyer about the problem. Make sure you have the proper knurled starter bolts for your big block so you don't have a redo of this problem.

Your right...

Its from a Truck. The flywheel I believe is out of a Monza.

You better hope not.
The 305 the Monza had was internally balanced and the 400 is external.

LOL

I guess I really dont know.

I remember the flywheel didnt have its normal amount of teeth.

I'll get the numbers etc, and put them up here.

I know the starter took me quite a time to match.
