I am gathering parts for a 454 BBC budget build for my k15
the truck is 1986 GMC K15
14BFF + 10bolts >> 3.73 gears
SM465 Trans + NP205 Transfer Case
33" tires
total weight with 350 SBC is almost 5000 lbs ( more with the BBC )
454 truck motor from a mid 80s Burb ( + 0.030 overbore )
236 peanut port heads + oversized valves 2.19/1.88 + DIY porting
stock crank + stock rods ( with ARP bolts )
TRW L2399F30 pistons ( SCR = 9:1 ) OR TRW L2349F30 pistons ( SCR = 10:1 ) Performer RPM intake ( square + spread pattern )
Performer 1407 750 cfm carb ( with offroad needle kit )ORa Q-Jet carb HEI dizzy with MSD module and coil ( MSD6AL is also available )
long tube headers + dual 2.5 exhaust + Throush glasspack mufflers
the truck is used in sand dunes + street + sometimes in the mud
and I want to retain the AC/PS/power brakes and be able to use low octane fuel
also I don't want to spend a lot on the valve train since I am not going to wind it past 5500 RPM
can you please guide me to choose a good cam for this application ?
272/217, 112/? .515" lift. Per Harold, "It's the best cam for pulling trailers, car-hauler or boats. Excellent bottom end and mid-range torque. Works power accessories. 1600-5500." and
276/221, 112/?, .515" lift. And again, per Harold, "The cam for pick-ups, 4 W.D. mud racers, performance and mileage on the interstate. 9:1 compression, 3.50 gears and up, and headers help. 380 HP at 5000 RPM. 1800-6000.
thanks a lot
where can I buy these cams ( online ) ?
and with this lift is it necessary to upgrade the stock valve springs ( I will install new replacements ) ?
also what do you think of these cams ? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CRN-10307
Crane Cams 10307
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 226 int./226 exh.
Advertised Duration: 282 int./282 exh.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.533 int./0.533 exh. lift
Lobe Separation (degrees): 108
WOW !
the 276/221, 112/?, .515" lift. cam made insane power and torque in Desktop dyno
even better than others with higher duration and lift (voodoo 60203, Xtreme 4x4 270 ... etc )
thanks for your advice but I am from saudi arabia and I usually buy from summit racing so I need to pick an off the shelve grind

this is the kit you are refereing to
Chevrolet V-8 80-95 Truck 366-396-402-427-454 cu. in. ---PN 13309-1
(w/Short valve spring assembly height)
Valve Spring PN 96801-16 Steel Retainer PN 99957-16
Most 1981 and newer Chevrolet and GMC Truck 454 cu. in. engines are designed with a
valve spring assembly height of 1.800”. This kit is designed specifically for those truck
applications. Engines designed with the taller assembly height of 1.880” should use Crane
Spring and Retainer Kit 13308-1.
- Recom’d installed spring pressure and height (valve closed)------114 lbs.@ 1.800”
- Open checking pressure and height ------287 lbs.@ 1.250”
- Maximum recommended valve lift and RPM ------.550” - 6500 RPM
