Supposedly the damage on the Camaro occurred during recovery (that was stated in another blog - not sure how reliable the info was.)

A sunken car rolling slowly on a straight section of submerged road with a downhill slope will roll pretty far. Looks like these two did. The physics of a rolling car is fundamentally different from a boat...even underwater. Water does not render a wheel inoperable.

Plus, the Camaro disappeared in late November, right? Water is pretty damn cold by then...even in OK.
Guess so

Keep in mind that aerial photo is of Now, think back to what it may have looked like 40 years ago a small one lane road down a small short ramp into the abyss.
Nov 20th 1970 was the coldest night that week with temps in the upper twenties so that water by the ramp may have been starting to freeze. Both cars were found right next to each other 50 feet from the base of the ramp however facing different directions so there is a good chance Ice may have played a factor there .
Here is the weather link.

If you have a LOT of time to kill, here's an interesting thread from 4 years ago to skim through... 5000+ posts of the locals theorizing what happened to them with some pretty "creative" stories.

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/sayr...2DSOQS402606TV

Drug cartels, mafia, etc... kind of entertaining to read some of it.

Good research on the weather! I had wondered about that as well. A downhill slope, a dark lonely slippery road. Wouldn't take much for it to go badly wrong.

how does no one ever notice 2 submerged cars right off an active boat landing for 4 or 5 decades? in that time, someone would have noticed that "something" was down there when it showed up on their depth finder...

Depth finder technology has come far enough in the past 15-20 years to see something like that, yes. But only really the past 10 years could those "bumps" be distinguished as something other than rocks or simply humps in bottom topography. I've spent an unusually large amount of time staring at a Lowrance in my life. Seen some odd things. Never crossed my mind those things could be cars from a 40 year old unsolved case. Now it will. Bo.

Highly possible nobody saw any gas or oil if the lake froze up right after the accident. Residue could be completely gone after three months of ice up.

Remember too this is rural Oklahoma 40 years ago. Several days could have passed between anyone at all being at the boat ramp.

It's possible 6 months passed between the car entering the lake and the first old duffer to put his boat in the water. A boat without a hi def sonar I'm betting. Bo

MN lakes are rarely frozen over in November, I can't imagine any in OK would be. A body of water takes a LONG time to cool down.

The road may have been icy, but the lake wouldn't have been.

I skimmed over that Topix link yesterday, those Okies get pretty nasty! Interesting read for sure. Also, I found interesting on a DOE site, there was an anonymous tip that the bodies of the 3 youths could be found in a lake more than 100 miles away. No date on that tip but I'm assuming it was close to the timeline of the accident.

Over 20 years ago a car was found in the bottom of Boomer Park Lake in Stillwater, Ok.
It contained the remains of two women who disappeared decades earlier on a winter night.
The lake had been drained to do maintenance.

It happens more often than we know.
