I have a Muncie for about 3 years in my garage. I bought it and I was told it was completely rebuilt. What I need to know is if there is a way to remove the cover to check the oil level, where should the oil be if full, and what type of oil should be in there if I am low? Also what sealant should go on to reseal the sideplate? Is there a gasket instead of the permatex gasket material? I want to ensure that it is full before it gets installed.
Thanks, Roland

There is a plug in the side of the case, take out the plug and that is where the level of the fluid is supposed to be at the bottom of the hole, make sure the transmission is sitting level. If you need to add fluid it has to be GL-4 do not put GL-5 in it, it will ruin the syncros.

It's better to fill it once it is in the car, so you don't get lube running out of the tailshaft. Also, that lets you use the fill plug to make sure it is at the proper level when it is mounted in the correct position.

Go to Napa and get 1QT of Sta-Lube GL4 (P/N SL24229). Drain your gearbox, reload with the new stuff. Life is good

One quart won't fill it. It usually takes around 1.5 or so.

Make sure you use GL-4....only.
Special order in most places. Do not use gl5..it does not have the lubricating properties needed.

Kidding you?
![]() $31 / gallon makes it no more expensive than any quart of 80W-90 lube, so why not use it? ![]() I think I paid $8 / quart through Amazon with free shipping (I added other stuff to the cart to get me above $25). |

============================= Agree'd on the Sta-Lube ,but the Muncie takes closer to 1.5qts gear oil to fill when completely empty. Scott
