Like a lot of you, mine has some sentimental ties which make it pretty much invaluable. I get the price question and I launch into how my father left the car to me when he died. Then I show them the teething marks on the window from when I was just a baby. I end with how it's going to be left to my son when I pass away, so maybe they should start up a conversation with him.....
If it were about money, I'd have gone into a different line of work.

When I get askedabout how much I paid for mine I smile and say $30. It was $200 for the car and $30 to trailer it to my house. I sold the fenders for $200. What do I have into it now? About 5000. What would it take to buy it from me. $15000. whats it really worth. 2500? jim

You could always reply with the line made famous by J.P Morgan...."If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it".

I paid $5100 for mine. I have put much $$$ and time into it. Spread all over the garage, probably worth $500 buck now.

My old neighbour Mrs. Goh wondered if I was throwing it away.

I learned real quick after I bought my Chevelle that if I'm in a mood where I want to be left alone, I take a different car.

(If his car had a for sale sign on it I would steal the title, stash the car some place safe, forge his signature, and put the car in my name.) One guy offered the princely sum of $1,000 once. Brother, at fair market value that $1,000 would not cover just one piece of the drive train in that car. Maybe he could buy the gauges from a repro outfit. The guy either thought I was an idiot, he was an idiot, or perhaps both. One guy offered $10,000 for it. Still, not a chance. I'd probably sell my '71 for $10k. Any takers?

A nice couple offered me their first born son for my '66 yesterday. He looked like a good kid (about 16 y/o) but I was more impressed with his mom.

Had to double clutch the brain in my groin and graciously offered to take them for a spin. All in good fun.

Woke up in the middle o' the night with a.....oh nevermind.

I thoroughly enjoy speaking with those kind of people, however I do it everyday. I sell cars for a living. When it comes to my car, the first one to come up with anything even close to the number the voices in my head tell me it's gone. Then I move on to something else!

Ignorance is tolerable, stupidity is ignored!

when someone asks how much to buy I tell them 30k. then they shut up. usually just get a friendly "nice car" when I'm out cruisin. I get a lot of "I used to have one just like it." One guy even told me he had an original 67 SS El Camino. Some guy always wants to race or wants me to burn em off. I get how much do I have in it. Women get pretty worked up when they ride in it. Teenagers tell me how I can sell it for 30K. I tell them if they know someone that will pay that much send them my way. None of it phases me one way or another. Not much anyway. Just part of it.

Some people have no clue. At a cruise night, these two, late 30's guys are walking the line of cars and I am hearing them interact, trying to guess what car they are looking at, they are so far off each time and only get it right when they read a name badge on the car. They get to my '66 SS one guy asks the other “what is it”, “I don’t know”, “oh here”, “it’s a Super Sport” as he reads the quarter panel badge and then they walk on to the next car.

Not annoying, just a story about someone who really wanted my car. In ’09 I notice a ’66 SS on a drive I passed on the way home from work each day. It was a retired Police Chief and bought it redo for as a retirement hobby. We got to talking and gave me his pristine stock steering wheel since he got an aftermarket Rosewood wheel. We become good friends, and became really is interested in my #’s matching SS in driver condition. I always kidded as we left cruise nights “take car of my car”. He offer’s his completely redone NOM ’66 SS with a built 454 as an even trade or $25K cash for my car. My wife was excited on the trade since mine is a 4 spd, she doesn’t like, but so was his trade. The money was great and could have bought a finished non SS Chevelle for that, but I and the family has grown attached to our ’66 and bought it as a restoration project for a later day. I am glad I never acted on the Police Chiefs offer. A year after we met, he got lung and brain stem cancer and died in 2010.

I had one PERSON and I use the phase lightly ask if he could buy the complete drivetrain out of my Camino because he wanted it for his Corvette. He did offer me $7500 and I told him he was nuts, heck the engine alone cost me 7k and that doesn’t include parts; I guess the 700R4, and Currie +9 was just a freebee. He told me the old song "but you started it", I have a grand total of 50 miles on everything now so I might just as well junk it now. Most do think about all the time someone spends on a car let alone the cost to build it, etc.

Despite my recent thread on LS1Tech, I think people will be people. And when I say that I mean they admire the car a ton, but they get jealous because they don't have a badass time machine. I'm sure everyone can relate here, we get more compliments than nosey people getting us frustrated. I admire the compliments that people give me when I drive around town, but this car must have a defective chick magnet because I have had the thing for a year and haven't gotten any long legged girls asking for a ride lol.

Dang, I had the 34 out Sunday afternoon and nobody asked to buy it or even walked over to look at it. Drove the Chevelle today and it sat in the restaurant parking lot all alone with nobody paying any attention to it!
