Question Aluminum "Double-Hump" Heads

(Yep, we'll have to make our own)

QUESTION FOR MACHINISTS

Who here has the equipment to take a pair of aftermarket SBC aluminum heads

and essentially "machine emulate" the end-surface of the factory double-hump heads?

Would need to withstand *sharp* street-racer eye-ball scrutiny, not Pebble Beach.

Would be quick hood-up...60-second look...hood-down...at night.

(Not worried about magnets, etc., just perfect copies of the double-hump ends)

Can supply double-hump heads if none on your end. ~ Thanks!

Jim Grubbs Motorsports in Valencia Ca. Did that to a set of AFR 195s, went on a 302ci buildup. Ask Tony about it maybe he has the link pretty sure it was featured in a mag.

Why stop there? Why not machine in a triangle and make them look like 882 heads? Make 'em look like smogger heads! Pop the hood and the car is still a sleeper!

Seriously, depending on how faithful a copy you want -- and what your budget is -- you could get the ends of a pair of heads (882 or fuellie) 3D laser scanned and from there get your aluminum heads CNC machined.

After some creative grinder work, paint and some sand can make Al. look like cast iron! DAMHIK

We did the Dart aluminums on the SHP 400 we did last year for a buddy's '61 Vette. Epoxy and a little hand work and they looked great. Filled the bolt holes, rounded the corners etc. Even drilled and tapped the rear side and made an internal baffle to run a hidden breather so we could use the Corvette script covers with no breahters on them. A little dust mixed in the paint made them look like cast iron.

Brezenski does some really cool sneaky stuff like this also.

Saw a set of "supposed" AFR's on ebay machined with the double humps on the end within the last couple of months. They were advertised as brand new, they never installed them.

These guys do it to aftermarket iron heads;

http://www.castheads.com/disguise_work.php

Maybe they could do it to an aluminum head too.

If you had a flat surface on the head you wanted to use, I don't see why a plate mimicking the design you wanted couldn't just be epoxied onto the front. And a little smoothing, and painting.

Crane had a version of the Camels "FIRE BALL" that were ported and polished, but nothing in aluminum. The modern heads are much better than the old Camels.

The ones I had were the old 292 "turbo" heads and had angle plugs. They had a single "tall" hump on the ends if memory serves. You won't mistake them for the old "fulie" heads.

It wouldn't be too hard for a CNC shop to do it. I'm having my company logo done on some BBC heads right now.

It could be done carefully on a Bridgeport too.

You can use a needle gun to give it the as cast appearance where needed.

I've heard that a sheet of very coarse emery laid on aluminum and tapped with a hammer gives nice results.
