I am converting my 307 Chevelle to a 454. I have ordered new frame stands and motor mounts and was planning on setting the motor in this weekend. I decided to doublecheck that I have the correct mounts and stands and after reading all of the posts on small to big block conversions I am unsure what I need.
I am putting in a 1976 454. I also have Hooker headers with a 3.5" collector that I plan to use. I ordered the following mounts and stands for a 1972 Chevelle with a 454: Frame Stand - GMK-4032-335-68L - Goodmark part Frame Stand - GMK-4032-335-68R - Goodmark part Motor Mount Kit - SUM-7731122 - Summit part - (Kit includes early style "tall and narrow" motor mount that measures 2 3/8 in. between the ears and 2 3/16 in. tall to the center of the through bolt hole and polyurethane mount for automatic transmissions.) The new Goodmark frame stands look exactly the same as the 307 stands I took off the frame. The 307 frame stands are definitelty original as the car only had 33K miles on it. I noticed Ecklers, Goodmark, Summit only seem to offer one set of frame stands that fit small and big block which some of the other guys had posted this same obsetvation. Is there a difference betwen left and right frame stands as it looks like the bolt pattern only allows it to fit on the frame one way? From the parts I am using and know I am going with decent sized headers does anyone know if this combo will fit? Is there anything I can do to measure to verify? Any help would be greatly apprciated. I thought putting the 454 would be pretty straight forward and probably is but there is a lot of info out there on the topic that leaves we wondering about my setup. Thanks in advamce for the help. |

Just my 2 cents, I have a 66 Malibu, that was orginally a small block v-8 car. Before I got it a 1975 454 was put in it. They didn't change the frame mounts and had problems with clearence with hood and air breather. My fellow car club members pointed out the problem. But after looking at other Malibu's that have BB, they have a clearence issue with the headers and the steering box I don't because the SB frame mounts hold the BB up higher, the clearence issue can be solved by ordering a breather that lowers the filter. My option the BB with SB frame mounts is the way to go.

There only effectively two types of motor mount styles from Chevy, 307 and everything else.
Just use your 307 frame mounts, with new 307 motor mounts and you will be fine. Return the other stuff, or get a matched set and swap them out for the original. The block location of the motor mounts is the same between small blocks, big blocks and 4.3 V6's. All are 90 degree V's with the same bolt pattern for the mounts.

My 2 cents,,,,, I converted my 71 Chevelle. It was a 307 with a 350T.
I used 1970 454 crossmember mounts and 1970 Big Block engine mounts with the locking tabs.( 7 years ago, NO issues ) Also with factory crossmember mounts ( 1970) the right side thru bolt hole is oblong, So insert the left side bolt and then the right side goes in very easy. AND YES... You can use many different engine mounting systems, To get a B. Block in your car including 307 frame stands. You can do dam near anything, If you have the time an money. Using anything OTHER than what G.M. designed, You may run the risk DOWN THE ROAD of, Fan blade blade to high in a stock B.B. shroud, ( Centerline of water pump to high). Clutch linkage? Under hood clearance? I would recomend using what Chevy used for Big Block attachment to your Chevelle. Remember TORQUE will brake things. Is there difference between the 307 Torque and a 454? Be safe, Do it right & correct. Bob P.S. 307 Crossmember mounts are taller , 350-396-454 are shorter, 350-396-454 engine mounts have more meat & locking tabs, I wonder why. Also 350-396-454 Starters are High Torque, Different fields and armatures & solinod. I have screwed up a lot of Chevelle stuff and created many headaches, Just do not want you to do some of the things I have done.

I don't know for a fact, but I was told years ago that the big block stuff moves the engine perhaps a half inch to the passenger side. Could explain why some people have steering shaft interference problems. We did a '74 454 into a '69 six cylinder Chevelle with small block frame mounts and big block engine mounts. The hooker headers just rubbed the steering shaft, but the collectors hung awfully low. That's a Hooker design problem and nothing to do with the mounts. Hedman tuck up nicely and seem to clear everything. They are all I ever used on my cars.

OK, so I am assuming the parts I listed above are correct and am going to try them. I went to install the frame stands (car did not have them when I got it) and it does not look correct. I have attached an image. Is that much of the motor mount supposed to hang off the cradle in free air?

I dont know where you are at with the install... but my frame mounts hanged over when i went to BB. The trans fit in just fine... I will say the hood isn't on yet. I bought the set AMC-103KIT, from www.ss396.com the 307 frame mounts i had wouldn't let the BB motor mounts fit properly. Good luck with the headers... just finished that, ugh.

Thanks for the response. I got the motor in and am fighting header issues. Had a set of Hookers and they did not fit at all. Got a set of Hedmans and they fit much better. Went to put the East Coast Starter in which is much smaller than the factory one that Hedman said the headers were designed around and the East Coast starter hits the header. Every step seems to be a puzzle but I am gradually getting there.

Doesn't apply to A body. I use the short engine cushions with lock tabs. If the frame stands are short also, the engine cushions get shimmed with stacks of washers to fit. The short engine cushions become "universal" that way.

I had the issue too, i went with the stock 454 starter... now i have the slow turn-over issue when the engine warms up. I've wrapped the cables, starter, solenoid... now it JUST starts when after its up to operating temp. Search the forums when you buy your 3/8" line... i ordered the pre-bent 3/8" line... that looks like i'm going to have to cut to get in, or raise the body off the frame. If i did it over, i think i would buy some 3/8" coil and a bender.
