Thanks a lot for the link Mike, helped a lot. I have another question though, did they make 2 different LS5's? I though I read on ground up's site that they made a 365 horse 454 and a 425 horse 454. If this is correct how do I tell which one was in a 71 Elky originally?

Jay,
I believe the 454cid/425hp only came in the Corvette, which is an LS6. I may be wrong.

The Ground Up link is incorrect for the 454/425hp engine in Chevelles. There were a few mule test cars with the LS6 in 71 but it was scrapped and to date no documented Chevelle has shown up that I'm aware of.

There were not 3 levels of El Caminos as described on the link either. The base (133-13480) El Camino and the Custom (13680); the SS optioned El Camino was not a separate animal as the information suggests and any optional V8 could be ordered with the SS option, not just the 454. I don't know where the "...simulated wood grain accents..." on Custom El Camino interiors comes from either. (?)

The basic SS option did feature a domed hood with hood pins but not "...a domed hood or cowl induction hood with pins." The cowl induction hood was optional on top of the SS option.

All the V8s except the 307 were optional, the LS3 is shown as a base engine when it was in fact an optional engine.

'71 LS5 El Camino's are a relatively rare bird. I had done my own extrapolation at the time I bought mine and Dan Carr's poster supports ~1,180 made within a standard statistical deviation. I think a numbers matching one would be extremely rare because they were readily ravaged and savaged at a faster rate than their coupe/'vert counterparts.
Here's mine: http://www.chevelles.com/feature/august2006.html
