Default 69 chevelle steering seems loose

In my 69 chevelle, the steering seems very loose, about 1/4 turn on the steering wheel of play, and no action to the wheels. Which parts should I look at to improve this and help tighten up the steering?

Im going to say worn gear box. And if you replace it i would do the Jeep Grand Cherokee box.

The first part I'd check would be the rag joint. I've seen them with three of the four connectors broken -- that results in a great deal of play. Have someone turn the wheel while you watch the joint.

The second thing I'd check is the steering gear box. Crawl under the car so you can watch both the steering shaft and the Pitman Arm. If the shaft turns a lot and the Pitman Arm does not then I'd suspect the box needs to be rebuilt (if you're into numbers there is a Date Code on the box access plate) or replaced.

ANYTHING loose in the front suspension/steering will create additional play in the steering wheel.

Idler arm, tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings...the list goes on.
