That depends on Engine Size, Headers: yes or no, and Sound Desired. You should have a crossover pipe (or "X" pipe) and full length exhaust. There are several videos on the Flowmaster site, I suggest you take a listen to them, there are some sweet sounds!

Listen to my flowmaster 40's, they sound beautiful. Here's a vid of the super 44's on a 72 but I dont think they sound as good as the 40's.
Here's a walkaround of my car.

Any engine. The 40's will make any engine sound cool and loud. |

40's will also, 9 times out of 10, drone terribly from around 1500 to around 1900 rpms, right where most cars rpm while cruising.

If you're looking for a true dual exhaust with a lifetime warranty, we have our stainless steel American Thunder Systems. The 817200 uses mandrel-bent, 16-guage 3-inch 409 steel tubing while the 817409 has 2.5-inch tubing. Both systems use Super 40 Series mufflers and have an aggressive exhaust note.
Although it has an aggressive exhaust note, the full systems exit out the rear of the car to direct some of the noise away from it. Attached is a pic of the 817200. As mentioned, the proper choice is going to depend on engine combination and what you're looking for. The 2.5-inch system will be for your stock to mild engine combinations while the 3-inch will support your higher horsepower mills. Hope this helps.

I had 2 different Flowmasters on the same car. In my opinion the sound was awesome on both except at one condition: The first one droned so bad around 50-55mph it just about drove me crazy. The second had no such issue but I don't recall which series I had. I do know 50-55 would have put me in the same rpm range as Highway Star wrote.
Until you have a bad drone you don't realize how much you get stuck in traffic driving at that speed...virtually every day for a significant part of a 17mile drive from work to home on a two lane road...ugh |

Ya know, I have heard the talk about droning at cruise speeds but I for one don't seem to have that issue. I've had 40s on my 350 for 12 years now and absolutely love them. Not too loud, a low throaty burble at idle, a nice note when revving up, and a good background tone when cruising. I have a cross over setup with the tips all the way out the back. I take it easy when I'm riding through the neighborhood and have never had any complaints about the sound. My wife and I can have a normal level conversation as we take the car out to dinner, a cruise night, or just a ride. I hardly ever have the radio on. My car sounds much better
![]() I would think you would be very satisfied with the 40s. |
