One suggestion in your search. You may have already tried this route but just putting it out there just in case. Try starting from the opposite direction. See if you either remember the name of who you sold it to, or some sort of paperwork from the sale you might have. I know that is a long shot and you more than likely already thought of it, but hope it helps and wish ya luck.

That would be a great place to start, to see if it's even still in existence (at least in one piece).
Any paying Team Chevelle member can search the Chevelle Registry at this website. I indicated, in a previous post, that I had done a search of the registry and did not find your VIN listed. Mike C (66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE) who I believe monitors the Registry may have seen my reply and figured no further action was needed.

I am not aware of anybody that keeps track of crushed cars. I think in the past they have just been purged from the records of the various states.

I suggest that you contact surrounding states and ask them if your VIN is in their system. Confidentiality laws may prevent them from providing an owner's contact information, but they can tell you if it exists. Then, you can ask that a letter (provided by you) be forwarded to the owner of record with your contact information, and hope that the owner will respond to you. Some states will do this for a fee.

Actually, you have already checked NMVTIS, so since it was not there, you only need to contact states that do not yet participate in NMVTIS. Illinois does not participate, so start with Illinois, and then try Missouri next, since Illinois is where you sold the car.

Good Luck!

Hire a private investigator.

They have "sources" who can get around the DMV's privacy laws, Tracking a VIN number down even across the country should be a pretty easy job for them (if the car hasn't been crushed).

Yeah, I may go that route...there's a guy who specializes in selling Corvettes right down the street from me...I may see if he knows anyone who does this service, now that I have the VIN.

Hi Bruce,

I missed your note about your checking the Chevelle Registry here....but I remembered everything else. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I haven't heard from the L78 Registry though.

I'd think cars that are as rare as '67 L78's would be pretty easy to locate in a Registry...only 612 L78's in 1967, and even fewer hardtops, and even fewer Deepwater Blue Metallic/Black Interior hardtops. Surely someone keeps an Updated L78 Registry!

If anyone can get me in contact with someone involved with the L78 Registry, that would be appreciated.

I may try contacting Illinois DMV again , now that I have the VIN....worth a try I suppose.

Thanks for all the assistance,

John

John,
Here is the contact information for Dale M's (Chevellestuff.com) L78 Registry. If your VIN is not listed, register it yourself so if someone finds the car they can contact you.

Have you tried www.yenko.net I know yours is not a Yenko, but they have sections for other specialty cars. It's worth looking into.
