Default Blazer V-8 Swap

I have a 1985 Blazer I am putting in a carb'd SB Chevy. What stock oil pan and manifolds will fit?
I do not want headers. This is a 2 wheel drive. I know I will have to change the Trans. Any thoughts here?

I have searched the S-10 forums, but the maturity level is just not there.

Thanks in advance

Default Re: Blazer V-8 Swap

what motor was in it before?

i used a regular SBC oil pan (like the chevelle/truck ones), 4.3 mounts and plates, nv3500 5spd manual, stock log manifolds (3rd gen camaro), stock 4.3 exhaust from the manifolds back.

this was in a 96 sonoma... i used parts that people on the s10forum said wouldnt work.

v8s10.org is a good site.

i used the stock alum.plastic rad, and the 4.3 serp belt set up. i also had a carb on it, which was a dumb idea as i had the l98 heads and the entire TPI and ecm and harness, but i thought it would be easier to put a carb on it, which it ended up costing me more money and time in the end.

you will be fine with yours, but my truck was efi, and when i got it it had the 350 already in it, but it was blown up.

man i miss that truck.

Thanks for the information. This truck currently has a 2.8 with an auto trans. I have a 400 trans out of a truck, I'm thinking about using with this swap since the original trans will not work. Any problems on using the original shifter on the column with the 400?

Just wanted to know what challenges I will face. So a regular SB oil pan will clear the crossmember? I'm looking at the transdapt motor mounts that use the stock 2.8 mounts, with the adapter bolted to these.

Thanks buddy,

JTR (Jaguars That Run) has a book with some of the best S10 v8 swap material in it. I did on years ago but sold the book with the truck. It listed part numbers for everything you need.

make sure you get the motor mount plates for the correct motor mounts.

a regular sbc oil pan work.
you will need to install the motor with the dizzy and the w/p off, atleast i had to. it drops in very nice

i am unsure about the shifter working with the th400. i had a manual NV3500 5spd in mine. and my friends all ran aftermarket floor shifters.

its a very straight forward swap. motor mounts, and the desired manifolds/headers you want, and your set. i cant remember what trans x-member to use with your trans, but i used the stock one in my 96 with the nv3500. the motor didnt sit back much further than a stock 4.3.

good luck, and post up some pics.

can see mine if you go to the photbucket link in my sig and click on the sonoma link on the left.

I am hopeful someone will chime in that has put a turbo 400 in a blazer, and used the column shifter. I know since this is a truck 400, I will have to go with that special yoke that Denny's Driveshaft sells for this swap.

Thanks for the infomation guys,

i dont think it take anything special. im pretty positive it would bolt almost up. what trans was in it before a th200?

whats diff about the truck trans? does it have the longer tail shaft? which yoke is this just the th400 yoke? or one to use your old ds?

the TH400 trans mount is in close to the same spot as the 700-r4 trans that was installed in probably millions of 4.3 powered S series trucks, so that part's easy.
i've seen a lot of 2wd S10's with small blocks in them, and i don't know of anyone that bought any kind of a mount kit. they all had mounts made by the people that installed them.
and if you ever think it's hard squeezing a V8 into that 2wd engine bay, just keep in mind that i put a TBI 350 in a 1988 4X4 S10 and made it look almost completely stock. this was back in early '04.
everyone said it wouldn't fit- but by welding the 4.3 oil pan sump to the 350 oil pan and making some 1/8" steel mount adapters and using some 67 Chevelle engine mounts, it dropped right into the 4.3 frame stands. then i had to make a y pipe to hook up the exhaust- for which i used the 3" single pipe and muffler from the '92 Caprice the engine came out of. i used all the 4.3 accessories and radiator- but had to use an aftermarket flex fan to fit it in there. with the exception of the TPS sensor, everything plugged in and hooked up like stock, and the Caprice ecm plugged right in place of the stock ecm.
that truck was a beast- i could not get it stuck in the snow drifts. but i couldn't get a title for it, so i took all my special parts out and scrapped it. my total investment in the truck was ther $100 i paid for the body, maybe another $100 in parts, and about 5 afternoons and evenings of screwing around over a period of a month.
anyways, the point of this whole rant is that if i can put a small block in a 4X4 using only what i had laying around in my shop, then a 2wd swap should be a cake walk- you can actually buy headers for a 2wd truck, so you won't be stuck with the stock manifolds.

If you have the bolt on yoke you can weld or epoxy a plug into the back side and use it. Put it back into the trans and pull it out about 3/4" then measure u-joint center to center and that will be your drive shaft length.
If you pull the tail housing and measure the spline, you will see that the bolt on will give you as much spline contact as any special yoke that you can buy.

http://www.v8s10.org/ is a pretty good site.

I used the transdapt mounting plates which will accept regular v-8 motor mounts and a stock oil pan. I am not sure about the exhaust manifolds since I went with long tube headers.

The JTR is one of the best manuals I've seen. The big plus is they use existing manufactured parts and components. Very few parts in the conversion are 'one off' items. Should something need replaced the nearest auto parts retailer is your source for a replacement.
