Noticed a leak from a line going into the transmission. It has one bolt attached on the lower driver side towards the rear of transmission. It has a silver grooved part wheel part that is loose and can see the dripping. Do I tighten it with a wrench to stop leak or is there more to it than that?

Michael is it your speedometer cable? If you follow that line does it go into firewall and then inside the cabin?

roger that- speedo cable. found a flashlight and got under to look. It is leaking like a siv. can see it coming from the speedo line into tranny. the line goes up under the firewall into dash from what i can see, so that is it.
Now, how do i stop it from leaking? tighten with wrench?

Take the cable off, clean it with a spray can of brake clean to get the grit and grime off. Then reassemble.

if it has fluid in the speedo cable housing that leaks out of the knurled nut that holds the housing onto the tranny it has a bad "inner speedo seal." not likely to be fixed by fiddling with the cable housing IMO. Guess how I know this. You have to remove the "wheel thing" and replace the o-ring around the ouside of it and the seal on the speedo gear. Fluid will run out when you pull the adapter out so have a pan ready.

You need to go to a transmission shop to get what you need. If after you remove the speedometer housing from the transmission, and it is made out of aluminum, I would try to get the steel one to replace it with. Most transmission shops refer to this part as a "bullet", because of the shape of it. The aluminum ones were bad to egg out the hole in the center where the plastic shaft of the gear rides, especially towards the inside end of the "bullet".

Gotter Done. (I hope) 1st trip to Napa on 51st/Bell (called first) and they said they had it. Well, when I got there, the story changed. Next stop: 28th and Bell. They had the rubber o-ring for the outer, but not the inner. They told me that 7th Street and Hatcher had it. Next stop: 7th Street and Hatcher. Well, as you can figure by the way this is going, the part would not fit. It was a later model rubber bushing with a metal race.
By now, I am getting a pit pissy as you can probably imagine. I ended up at Aamco- (beep beep) at Cave Creek and T-Bird/Cactus. Steve was AWESOME. He took me to the bat cave in the back of the store and found the exact little bushing bugger that could not be found on my journey. On top of that, he gave me an extra for good measure. NO CHARGE for anything. He was just happy to get me taken care of (FINALLY) So, got home, gotter put back in and NO LEAKS! (keeping my finger crossed) Took her for a run and speedometer works and cruised to checker to get a quart of trans fluid to get her back to full. Got an extra rubber bushing if anyone runs into this problem and has the same speedo for turbo 350. Glad to help out a fellow Chevelle owner and pay it forward from Steve at Aamco. Michael |

Well, that did not last long. drip, drip, drip. Ended up getting a new steel housing (bullet), gear and seal to fix this biatch for good. It was worn out, grove in the gear etc.
You were right bigbocks66- good call!
