OK guys here's what I hope is not a silly question, but why can I not get the round outside ignition switch nut off on the dash of my 1967 chevelle? I can un screw if about 3/4 of the way and then it stops like it's stripped. I don't know if I did something wrong, I have looked in old manuals and I can't find anything on how these are assembled. Thanks for any help.....feel free to make fun of me if I did something really wrong!

This from JohnD 6/8/09 :
You need the key. Insert the key and turn to accy., then push a paperclip or small drill bit in the hole and turn the cylinder past accessory (you'll feel spring loaded resistance from the lock pin).... it should pop out. The cylinder is installed after the switch is in the dash. The "locking ring/hold-down nut".... there is a special 3-pronged tool to remove them. I made one for my use with a piece of tubing. I don't remember the diameter, but it was big enough to sit about 1/2 way down the "cone" of the nut. I marked it and then filed away everything but the 3 prongs. Once you've got the tool, the nut really isn't on there very tight... From me: In my personal experience with these things I used a screw driver to turn the locking ring CCW to remove it. Once the lock tumbler assy is out the locking ring is easy. You only need to make a tool if you are keeping your Chevelle in pristine condition. I was never faced with that issue. Cigarette lighter. Pull the power wire off the back of the lighter and manually unscrew the retaining ring. You have to do this under the dash. There is no lock assy issue here. It's just a hassle getting to the locking ring. One of those tip yourself upside down and squirm under the dash to get at it kind of deals. Hope that helps. Bill |

Simply put. That very small hole in the ignition switch accepts a small nail or drill bit to push a small button inside releases the key switch tumbler. You need the key and its been a while since I have done it on my 66. You need to have it turned to the right location. Mine was forward to acc position. A wire will just bend and wont be strong enough to push the button down. Drill bit or small nail works best.
