Love the old school comp cam, i believe that is the 294S...
that cam has always made good power. That is what i call an old school lazy cam, they are usually easy on the valvetrain and will turn some RPM's Then couple that with a smaller runner head that flow decent #'s and you will pack the cylinders full...and the fuel will be extremely atomized and this will create a bunch of lowend and midrange TQ, and you can still pull on the big end...if all the tuning is on and it looks like it is!!! what do you shift that big 468" at ? |

i shift at 6700 and go through the traps at 5500. i had it chassis dynoed and saw the hp curve trend down at around 6500.
this combo is very "old school" if you think about it. home ported cast iron ovals, an old style grind, good old fashion 850 holley! |

I would suggest a header change to a 2" pri tube and rear gear change to a 3:73. The car & combo will pick up a bunch. I'm thinking their is a 10:60 to 70's in the car easy and maybe more.

Put a good converter in it and it will wake it up. Eleven 0's aint shabby for that combo.

I would not change a thing ..Just drive it and enjoy it...
Yes you could go quicker , everyone could go quicker, but to have a vehicle that can run anywhere in the 11's and be driven wherever you would like to go ...that is a fun ride,, Good job ,,and keep rackin' up the miles |

3.42 gears, to boot!!!![]() Must be the perfect storm of parts, shift points, weight, chassis, etc.. Any chance you could post the graph? What kind of power did it make? How's the chassis set up? Shocks, springs, traction devices, etc.?

It's impressive, I would say, but I don't think there's anything mysterious going on. There are guys running 10.90s with flat tappet 396 big blocks in full weight Chevelles, so running that with a 454 and the Camaro, which might be a little lighter, can obviously be done, even with the "high" gears.
Do you have a mechanical fan and water pump? Give us some more details: tires, suspension, etc. I agree with someone above who said you can always go faster. More and more, I am just interested in trying to ring out everything possible from a given combo. That's really the most fun anyway. There's always somebody faster. Very impressive ride! |

Are we talking street cars with 3.42 gears?

here is some more info on the car. its a gen 6 bbc, 4 bolt main with a cast crank. when i got the engine i thought i scored a roller setup because of the 1 piece rear seal. the engine was from a 96 1 ton van and had a flat tappet cam.i used the rods from the engine which use the 3/8 rod bolts.the assembly was balaced and bored with torque plates at a local machine shop, and i assembled it in my garage.there is nothing trick about this set-up, no light weight rotater, no vacume pump and low tension rings.
i use an electric fuel pump because the block has no provision for a mechanicle pump. i have electric fans and aluminum radiator from a 87 tpi firebird. i have chrome crank and waterpump pulleys from a swap meet and a moroso deep grove alt pulley. i use a mallory hyfire6 box with an accell hei dist. im using the hypertech coil for the hei. i used a full comp cams valvetrain with the stainless 1.7 rockers. the valves are really heavy milidon stainless.the cam is the 294s. the chassis consists of comp. eng. subframe connecters and j-bolt traction bars. i also use the threeway adjustable shocks front and rear. i have poly bushings in the original re-arched leafs and moroso trick springs in the stock front suspension. the car is an original manual disc brake car and has powersteering. the trans is the original th-350 from the car with good clutches, bans, and sprag. the valvebody uses a trans-go shift kit. i have the stock steel driveshaft. here are a few links to check out my car and a little vid with strokd66 http://videos.streetfire.net/video/s...rns_196905.htm http://videos.streetfire.net/video/s...rns_196905.htm |

No. But less motor, a 396/4 speed/780 carb/stock intake 68 Chevelle. Not a street car though, class racer, all steel, full weight, etc. To be "streetable" he'd just have to throw in an auto with OD.
Not putting down the Camaro. It's a great ride for sure. I love that he's gotten it done with the 3.42 gears and a TH 350. Don't worry, I'm green with envy. ![]() scott |
