Default SBC head gasket help

I am in the process of reinstalling my cylinder heads and I am having a heck of a time removing the gasket residue from my block. I believe that the previous gasket was from chevy for a corvette w/ aluminum heads and it was copper coated. The copper does not want to come off the block. I have tried Carb cleaner, Locktite Gasket Chisel, and scraping with a razor. No luck. Do I need to remove this? If so, any pointers?

Thanks in advance,

Kurt

You need to get it off just to make sure you have a clean surface.

It may take a while, but go slowly with a new razor blade, that should take care of it.

Good luck, better take time to get it right now than to have to do it again later.

Jason,

I tried something similar called Gasket Chisel made by Loctite. It worked Great on the gasket material but there is a copper/metallic residue left that just won't come off. It is very frustrating!!

Thanks,

Kurt

Buffer wheel on an angle grinder might work. What about a scotchbrite pad?

IT sounds like someone sprayed the gasket with either silver or copper colored paint ! this is an old "secret" to re-using a head gasket ! The paint somhow impregnates into the block surface . If you cant feel the residue ? dont worry about it . If you can ,you mustremove it ! NOW You can use a scotch brite wheel and a angle grinder to remove this residue """"""BUT""""" MAKE SURE YOU DONT GET ANY SCOTCHBRITE SHAVINGS in the cylinders !!!! if you do, you will scratch the cylinders and possibly cause damage ..MAKE sure you mask off really good ,THEN blow the cylinders out with HIGH compressed air . OH and mask your lifter valley off really good as well .

If you have an air compressor and an angle grinder then hunt you up a hard rubber wheel attachment. They are green, and have little knobbies that gaskets can't take but you can hold the damthing up against your hand. Great for automotive stuff, like aluminum heads and manifolds. Won't strew abrasive crap everywhere like crotchfright and emery wheels do.

3m roloc p/n 07524, and noticed they are available in smaller OD too

Geez, ain't no reusing gaskets here!

I've used Krylon aluminum spray paint, CopperCoat, both shoe polish type dauber bottle and spray can type, as well as good old "Indianhead" fine through the years and the hardest to clean up was the dammed "Indianhead"!!!

Try some Ethylene Chloride IF you can find it??

Dam stuff will remove "Mr Clean's" smile!!
