Default Exhaust prices

Looking for a place to hook up an exhaust, and I went back to the three main shops that are nearby. It has been a while since I priced a system, and was wondering if this sounds about right. I have my own mufflers (Dynomax Super Hemis) and just want a 2.5" dual system from the headers out back over the axle with exits below the bumper. One place quoted me $250, another 'no more than $450' and the third didn't really want to give me an estimate without an appointment. I asked each place what they thought of a 3" system, and two of them told me that I'd be disappointed with it, that I would lose power on the low end. I have about a 425-450 hp mild 468. The third shop (the one that refused to quote me) refused to believe that 3" pipes could clear the axle. This is for straight duals, no H or X pipe, pretty basic system.

I got the same response at a local muffler shop here in AZ. I ended up with 3" with a crossove pipe to the muflers, and 2.5" up and over out the back. all n all, it works great. If I ever re-do the exhaust, I would order a 3" mandrel bent kit and have a shop install it. A friend did the Torque Technologies 3" kit on a 69 Camaro. verry nice fit. Now summit and jegs has there generic kits for real cheap. I havent seen them, but imagine thay would work the same. I like 3" pipes on a high performance machine.

The $250 sounds similar to what I paid for my 2 1/2 system on my Camaro a few years back. But there were wrinkles in the bends, mandrel would be better. That was the same deal, I already had mufflers, and it was dual all the way back, no cross-over. As I recall it knocked more than a tenth off my ET, but then again part of the old system was just 2 inches. And this is only on a 355.

And Mark, do you ever do the Mesa monthly downtown cruise? I'll be there the 27th, unfortunately not with a Chevelle though. It's just a very big pile of parts at this point.

I would think that 468 would benefit from a 3" system...ESPECIALLY if it's got the old style crimp type bends.....
