I looked all around, but couldnt find the info I was looking for exactly. I just converted my 69ss from a TH400 to an M22. I have everything installed in the car, and am not far from firing it up.
However, I have noticed that in order to shift into reverse, I have to shift into 3rd first. It wont be a problem, but I just want everything to be correct. So the 1st/3rd rod must me in the 3rd gear position or reverse will not engage. Is this normal operation? Also, I just want to thank everyone, as this conversion would not have been possible without all of the great advice I have received on this site. Bob Castle Rock, CO |

With the engine off the synchros can't provide any help. If this problem persists with the engine running, then yes you have a problem. I'd bet money the problem won't exist with the engine running and/or the car moving.
Reverse isn't sychronized so when going into reverse immediately after having starting the engine, it's always a good idea to shift into a forward gear first and then into reverse.

I ordered a LS-5 M-22 El Camino in Feb. of 1970... Used the stock Muncie shifter untill July 1970. (installed a Hurst ) The 3 month old Muncie shifter sat for 26-27 Years, Then I did a frame off, Re installed the O.E.M. 3 month old shifter. Most people call them Muncie Shifters.
Chevrolet had a problem with naming the parts correctly. Yes the transmission is a M-22. The shifter that bolts to the crossmember, ( What Genius came up with this idea) Was given the wrong name. The correct name should be " The Mystery Shifter " by Chevrolet. The Vegas odds are 5 to 1, You may get it RIGHT ! ---- Now and Then.......... Bob

Thanks for the replies. I was out of town for the last few days.
OK, I am a few hours out from firing it (still hooking up hoses, electric, fluids, etc). So I will know if the problem clears with a rotating engine or moving car. I also got the reverse switch that goes on top of the steering column on the inside of the firewall, and cant figure out how to mount it. The factory assembly manual was no help with this one either. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. |
