Default What are the symptoms of a bad or loose pilot bearing?

I have a clunck when I let off the gas at low speeds. If I tap the gas lightly it cluncks again. I'm pretty sure its coming from the trans, could a loose or bad pilot bearing cause this? It's with my Tremec 5 speed.

Check the U joints and suspension parts first. A bad pilot bearing won't clunk but will cause other problems like vibrations and hard shifting.

New U-joints, all new suspension, ALL new clutch and every piece of linkage, driveshaft is not hitting the floor. I'm stumped.

a friend has a 66 chevelle w/TKO600.
same clunk situation.
we found the spider gears had excessive wear.(open rear).
replaced the gears and all is good now.

Get Under The Car With It In Park And Try To Move The Drive Shaft. It Sounds Like U-joints Or Rear End Gears.

The symptom of a bad pilot bushing is clutch chatter. Once the clutch is engaged, the pilot bushing cannot be responsible for clunking sounds. The u-joints or worn rear end gears are the most likely candidates.

Sorry, I dont mean to bring up such an old topic, but I have the same situation. Tremmic T5 . I have been having a clunk from the mid to rear of the car (behind seat) whenever I put the clutch in to shift. It becomes less noticable with each increasing gear. I had a stock rear in, and it was quite noticable, then I swapped in an entirely different axle with a shorter gear and it was not as noticable but still presant. The clunk has persisted through shock+bushing replacement, new springs, a new yoke, new u-joints, new tranny mount, and now the rear. Any suggestions?


This is not the my truck in my signature. An 89 mustang is the car in question if that makes a difference.
